Less than a week after graduating from high school in Rochester, New York, five young women are dead after their SUV crashed and burst into flames. The five were traveling in a Chevrolet Trail Blazer down a 55 mph stretch of road in East Bloomfield on Tuesday night when it passed a van and swerved back across the two-lane road into oncoming traffic and hit a tractor-trailer, knocking down utility lines which cut out phone service in the western half of Ontario County. Both vehicles burst into flames. The driver of the tractor trailer walked away from the crash while all five victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
Four friends were traveling in another car behind them and witnessed the SUV take some time to pass the van before swerving off the road. Four of the victims were members of the Fairport High School cheerleading squad. They included Bailey Goodman, Hannah Congdon, Meredith McClure, and Sara Monnat. The fifth victim was Katie Shirley who left the cheerleading squad as a freshman. They had all attended their graduation last Thursday and were heading to the Keuka Lake camp to celebrate. Now, the town is coming together to mourn their untimely deaths.
