I'd rather read a novel, like The Street Life Series, that is entertaining and that I can remember versus reading a novel that I forget once the last page is turned. As an example, when I see a scary movie and I'm looking over my shoulders for days, I categorize that as a great movie. In my opinion the book uses the dark images to capture the readers attention; however, don't forget about all of the characters in the story that talk to Teco about quitting the street life. Will Teco listen? That's the real question and the reason why I will want to read the entire series. By the way, there is a parental advisory in the beginning of the book.

From everything I have read about Kevin Weeks, he wants the reader to despise the street life. So if you were disturbed, that's a good thing. I've also read that he wants parents to take what they have read in the book and talk to their children about the consequences of running the streets. I've read the book and found out things I didn't know about life on the streets. I come from a middle class family and now I have teenagers of my own. Since reading the book, there are things I can now discuss with my son that would have otherwise gone over my head. There is one point that I particularly liked in your review. You said, “With no family (at least in his mind)” in reference to the main character Teco. See Teco did have a family in the story. So we as parents need to wake up and read about what attracts kids to this gangster life; otherwise, the streets will consume even more. I applaud your review and I also applaud Kevin M. Weeks for striking a nerve. There are not many authors out there who will make you ponder life through fiction.
