Two: Many argue that  the Waffen SS was merely an elite fighting force, and it was not the same as the group that killed Jews.
Three: on the other hand, it was usually manned by volunteers, showing that Grass was not a mere "draftee" like the present pope who was drafted into the regular army, but was an enthusiastic Nazi.
As for the Tin Drum, it was over my head...one of those "intellectual books" that are both dated and will be forgotten...</description>
