Sometimes we read about 12 planets instead of nine earlier

The mounting smear campaign against the UPA-Left presidential candidate Pratibha Patil is raising hackles in the ruling coalition that while winning the number game would not be a difficult task, it could lose the perception battle in the end. The exasperation is showing. Earlier, Left leaders had tried to defend Patil amidst the growing din. Now CPM General Secretary Prakash Karat chooses to fob off all media queries about Patil by saying flatly, “You should ask the Congress. They selected her.” The Congress on Wednesday attacked Bharatiya Janata Party leader L.K. Advani for calling UPA Presidential nominee Pratibha Patil “tainted.” The party also suggested that Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, contesting as independent, step down as Vice-President following the moral standards set by Ms. Patil.

As of now, the UPA along with support from the Left, the BSP and others have some 5.81 lakh votes against the BJP/NDA’s 3.44 lakh votes. The SP, the AIADMK and the Shiv Sena account for about one lakh votes and the TDP some 14,000 votes in an electoral college with a vote value of 10.98 lakh.

In a new revealation the Times of India reported that a case based on an ‘authenticated’ suicide note of a teacher, Kisan Dhage, who accused Patil’s husband, Devisingh Shekhawat, of driving him to take the extreme step is pending before the Bombay High Court. Two lower courts had turned down Devisingh’s plea to quash the proceedings against him.

Sensing trouble with the nomination PM Manmohan Singh on Wednesday sprang to the defence of Pratibha Patil but this maybe too late with the BJP releasing a two article booklet titled  Does This Tainted Person Deserve to Become the President of India?,  penned by Arun Shourie.

The increasingly troubled Pratibha Patil nomination is unlikely to be salvaged pending a planetary intervention. On September 8th 2006 as Rajasthan Governor Pratibha Patil used the Raj Bhavan to launch an astrology website. The event was organized by Bharatiya Prachya Jyotish Sansthan. Speaking on the occassion Pratibha Patil made these astounding remarks:

Sometimes we read about 12 planets instead of nine earlier

Considering the fact that there is so much interest as well as faith in astrology in India, there is need for in-depth study of the possible impact of the recent astronomical findings about the planets

urged Indian scholars to study and assess the possible impact of recent changes in the status of Pluto as a planet on the astrological calculations

Astrology is a serious and deep subject which has a great influence on our society. The growing expectations of the people from this subject requires application of science and technology

Offstumped Bottomline: Whether Pluto is a planet or an asteroid, the Pratibha Patil nomination looks set to be doomed. The question is who will blink first – the Left or Pratibha Patil herself ?
