You have to wonder sometimes, what exactly goes through folks’ minds. Take Dick Cheney for example. A battle-hardened veteran of political combat really ought to know better than to declare his office exempt from an executive order on national security; Even if it is exempt and even if the order’s scope does not include him.

The White House statement on the subject said that Cheney is complying properly and that the presidential order was not intended to treat the vice president’s office as an executive branch “agency,” and therefore Cheney’s office is exempt from the reporting requirement.

According to AP reporting on the subject, the issue is a requirement that executive branch offices provide data on how much material they classify and declassify. That information is to be provided to the Information Security Oversight Office at The National Archives.

Cheney appears to be technically correct, but one has to wonder if he just decided to make a scene for some nefarious distraction purposes or if he really didn’t think it through.

As it is, left-leaning outlets like the Daily Show are having the time of their lives distorting the situation. Stewart’s band of merry libs have hammered the story. My personal favorite –come on, it’s funny no matter who you vote for- is Justice Dick Cheney who casts the “tie making 10th vote” if Kennedy happens to vote with the left since Cheney is and is not a member of the Executive Branch.

I know the libbies are making political hay, but I expect the “evil emperor” puppet master to operate with a little more finesse, even if he’s neither evil nor imperial.
