ECOWAS FACT-FINDING MISSION ARRIVES SIERRA LEONE ON MONDAY

A four-member ECOWAS assessment mission arrives Sierra Leone on Monday, 25th June 2007 to evaluate preparations for the country’s August 2007 elections. The  mission, which is led by Mr. David Kangah from Ghana’s Electoral Commission, also includes Mr. Joseph Colley from the Electoral Commission of The Gambia, Dr Remi Ajibewa from the ECOWAS Commission and Mr. Yaw Donkor, Acting head of the ECOWAS observation and monitoring bureau in Monrovia.

During its 10-day assessment mission, the delegation will hold consultations with the stakeholders, including government officials, representatives of political parties and the civil society, the media and officials of the National Electoral Commission.
The ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance provides for the dispatch of fact-finding missions to countries preparing for elections, not only to gauge the level of their preparedness but also to determine if they require assistance to facilitate the conduct of free, fair and credible elections.
