<b>John Cleveland</b>: Facts, my good sir, are not debatable. Nor are they in great supply. Extrapolations based on facts are extremely debatable, and I thought that's what we were doing here.

As for personal insults, I will remind you that your commentary included, <i>"Mankind is not bad, as a general rule, though there are many who could be counted as such. Among them, those who hold mankind back from taking positive action against clear and present dangers such as climate change. I can visualize Dalton standing on the sands of Kitty Hawk heckling the Wright brothers."</i> You'll notice of course that you outlined who is bad, then outlined my position, and then named me in a straw man scenario-a clear inference and a personal insult.

"Grab a tiger, get the teeth..." as my Granny always said.

If I genuinely hurt your feelings, then I apologize. I would imagine that your research has given you great insight, so your input should be valuable. I just haven't seen anything from you yet that qualifies as input.

Could not leave without asking Thomas Laprade to research beyond his beliefs. My old professor told us to ask “why” five times.

The average amount of energy striking the Earth’s surface is about 340 watts per square meter. That has increased about 0.12 w/m2 in the past century. Insignificant compared to mankind’s contributions. If the Sun’s output had increased enough to warm the Troposphere, it would also warm the Stratosphere, which is not warming.

Please visit http://www.realclimate.org/ and http://www.desmogblog.com/directory/quick/ for some accurate data. Desmogblog does a great job of exposing the “scientists” who are on ExxonMobil’s payroll.

Since I spend hours each day researching, analyzing and reporting, I can’t stay long at sites such as
Blogger News that contain no relevant scientific data. Unsupported rhetoric only serves to confuse the issue.

Besides, wouldn’t it be nice to breathe clean air, drink clean water, and save 30,000 deaths per year due to industrial and auto emissions?

Dear Editor, June 22/07

Recent research by Henrik Svensmark and his group at the Danish National
Space Center points to the real cause of the recent warming trend. In a
series of experiments on the formation of clouds, these scientists have
shown that fluctuations in the Sun's output cause the observed changes in the
Earth's temperature.

In the past, scientists believed the fluctuations in the Sun's output were
too small to cause the observed amount of temperature change, hence the need
to look for other causes like carbon dioxide. However, these new
experiments show that fluctuations in the Sun's output are in fact large
enough, so there is no longer a need to resort to carbon dioxide as the
cause of the recent warming trend.

The discovery of the real cause of the recent increase in the Earth's
temperature is indeed a convenient truth. It means humans are not to blame
for the increase. It also means there is absolutely nothing we can, much
less do, to correct the situation.

Dear Educate Yourself,

If you wish to comment on my scientific papers, which you are welcome to do, I would appreciate your first familiarizing yourself with them. They are posted at:

http://members.iinet.net.au/~glrmc/new_page_4.htm

Opinion pieces written for newspapers are, of course, not "research", but when they are written by practising research scientists then they can be expected to be accurate and reliable. Should you wish to read some of my opinion pieces, you can find them at:

http://members.iinet.net.au/~glrmc/new_page_1.htm

And, finally, a word of advice. A science hypothesis needs to be judged on its SCIENTIFIC merits, not on what your opinion might be of the person who proposes it. Hypotheses are blind to who might or might not have been paid to generate them.

Kind regards.

Educate Your Self: on second thought, I'll just respond now. I wouldn't want anyone's feelings to be hurt.

I find it interesting that all proponents of global warming skip over the implications of the little ice age. I also find it interesting to note that few people are made aware of the fact that a single volcanic eruption spews more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than all human endeavors ever made.

A critical thinker might wonder if Carter's research was black balled because it went against an intrinsic institutional bias. I mean, if there were some flaw in the research, the Princes of Academia would have attacked the study rather than simply ignoring it. It's also worth considering that Carter, a humble, lowly adjunct, may have simply wanted the money so he sold his completed work rather than submitting it to the peer-review process.

And finally, your argument that "since all the cool kids" support the notion of global warming doesn't really add anything to the conversation. All those institutes would have authoritatively stated that Columbus was about to sail off the edge of the flat Earth.

John: Who is David Dalton? I'm John Galt's nephew, and while I feel pretty old some mornings, I wasn't even a twinkle in my daddy's eye when the Wright Brothers made their road trip to Kitty Hawk. Had I been around, I'd probably have been an investor; innovations are kind of my thing. Please don't waste your time looking for me, because you definitely don't want to find me.

Since you would like to whip out credentials and see whose is larger, I'll respond in kind. I am a trained, professional researcher and observer with roughly 35 years of experience. While I offer no "testimony" in the field of global warming, I'm really good at observations. I've already made an observation about <i>your</i> credentials and it rhymes with "schpull of schpit." For one thing, there happen to be more trees in the US today than there were when the first Viking set foot on the continent (or the first Basque fisherman if you credit THAT theory). For another, the temperature data is irrefutable.

And finally, make no mistake about my orientation. I make sure that my own family minimizes its use of resources, and I loudly exposed a recycling scandal where the contractor was cashing in on the aluminum and just throwing everthing else in the trash. I am very well aware of humanity's fragile connection with nature, but since there are so many good reasons to conserve the environment, shouldn't we be able to shun the fairy-tale scare tactics?

Educate your Self: I'll get to you later. I'm heading to the pool :P

Who are the real self-loathers?

Those who are supported by records of of increasing global mean temperatures
over the past 150 years, 400,000 year studies of carbon dioxide fluctuations and
their resulting effect on the earth atmosphere, 30 major scientific societies and
academies of science, including all of the national academies of science of the
major industrialized countries, OR..

...those supported by "bob carter", well-known for his ability to only get his 7-year
"research studies" (read: misinformed editorials) published on the exxon/mobil
funded tech station central website.

Theres nothing wrong with dissenting views, just take them at their intrinsic worth
and do the math before spouting off gleefully.

David Dalton. The name comes up in an Internet search, but who is this particular David Dalton? Apply the same criteria used by the Republicans, multi-national corporations, and general assorted naysayers: who is he and what are his qualifications for offering testimony on the issue of global warming?

While I may not be a climate scientist, I am a retired design engineer and dedicate myself to researching the data from peer-reviewed scientific journals, the published work of the dedicated men and women on the ice. Popular press should be ignored as it offers confusion rather than facts. ExxonMobil, as an example, spent $16 million in 5 years to create that confusion.

Dalton’s diatribe offers not a single shred of truth. The data from the brave souls on the ice prove otherwise. Readers - look it up for yourselves.

Dalton does have a way with words, and rhetoric does seem to win out over fact, because people just don’t seem to grasp facts as easily as a cleverly packaged lie. To prove the point, I offer our President.

Mankind is not bad, as a general rule, though there are many who could be counted as such. Among them, those who hold mankind back from taking positive action against clear and present dangers such as climate change. I can visualize Dalton standing on the sands of Kitty Hawk heckling the Wright brothers.

Fossil fuels are bad for the environment, of which we are a part. We can not live without green plant material. It takes the carbon dioxide that we exhale and converts it into oxygen that we inhale. Like it or not, we are inexorably linked to nature.

When all the trees are gone, where will our oxygen come from?

While I will defend to death David’s right to spew nonsense, he does the world a great disservice. Someone out there may actually believe his fake facts and beguiling rhetoric.

When all the trees are gone, where will our oxygen come from?

While I will defend to death David’s right to spew nonsense, he does the world a great disservice. Someone out there may actually believe his fake facts and beguiling rhetoric.
