The National Organization for Women (NOW) and other women advocacy groups have filed suit against the Bush Administration seeking to abolish Fathers Day. During a press conference held after the filing of the lawsuit, Kim Gandy of NOW said, "the day clearly indicates that it is meant to recognize only fathers."
The American Civil Liberties Union, filing on behalf of the organizations said the day runs afoul of equal protection and Title IX provisions and should be abolished because it is discriminatory against women. "It is time to move beyond the pattern male discrimination against women so prevalent in the home and the workplace," according to a press release.
It wasn't solely the discriminatory aspects of Fathers Day that had the groups aroused, but the fact that Fathers are chiefly responsible for domestic violence, childhood sexual abuse, and are often negligent of their children. Many fail to make their child support payments in a timely fashion, if they make them at all. This has many women's groups wondering what is commendable about fathers that should give them a day to celebrate them. Prof. Hrdy in a recent TIME Magazine article showed that at best fathers only spend about 30 minutes a day with their children.
The Chicago Federation of Women is running a campaign, "What Will It Take", to recruit men to admit their fault in domestic abuse and accept a pattern of reparations. Gandy again cited the culture of support for domestic violence among men that has outlets across talk radio, such as Rush Limbaugh, who encourages violence against women.
Andrea Dworkin, in speaking on the lawsuit, said "Marriage as an institution developed from rape as a practice," and that there is nothing to celebrate simply because a rape resulted in childbirth. Dworkin said, if anything, people should be mourning the great harm done to women at the hands of men on Fathers Day.
Other women's groups focused less on the history of violence of men and their failure to parent their children but instead focused on women's rights. "It's her body and her choice, the right of women to choose motherhood is solely and exclusively hers. After donating his genetic material, the only contribution necessary from men is to mail their child support payments on time," according to Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards.
The lawsuit was met with outcries from men's rights groups and family organizations who attempted to file an amicus brief with the court which was rejected almost immediately. The opinion of the court was that such groups were not entitled to voice their views because they violated the separation of church and state "which is the source of the patriarchal attitudes which they seek to defend."
The Bush Administration was unavailable for comment.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackWe have mothers’ day. It is only fair that there is one for fathers as well. For the last 25-30 years men have been portrayed unfairly by the media. This is so typical of feminists. They want women to be allowed the good things that men have and once they get them, want them taken away from men. There should be no discrimination against men or women. We should go after only those individuals that are responsible for causing harm to someone else and never mind what kind of plumbing each person has. I guarantee that if it was men that had been abused by women throughout history, men would still not be enjoying many of the rights women now have.
It’s unbelievably shocking to know that people in this world actually think like this. Many of these women forget that they wouldn’t be here without that minimal donation of dna from a man. Maybe they had crappy fathers but there are plenty of crappy mothers out there and plenty of women who physically abuse men as well. It’s just under reported because men are embarrassed to admit they are being beat and abused by their partners. If their going to do without father’s day then do without mother’s day also. They don’t want equality. They want preferential treatment because they have a vagina. It’s women like that that make us all look bad. I celebrate men and women alike. We are both necessary for the creation and evolution of humanity. Only when we come to true equality will we have learned from the past mistakes and move toward a more enlightened species. Moms are not the end all be all in the world. Anyone can pop out a kid and doing so doesn’t automatically make you a mother just like knocking a women up doesn’t automatically make you a father, that takes hard work and dedication. Both male and female have a long way to go because I don’t see any perfect children out there. We’re a screwed up society and groups like the NOW organization should be disbanded and a thing of the past and deemed archaec in their beliefs and a detriment to free thinking people everywhere. Being allowed to spread their message of hate is a form of terrorism that should be sought out and destroyed. Their leaders arrested for hate crimes and breeding terrorism. There are good and bad people everywhere and being a woman or man should not automatically make one superior over the other. It’s disgraceful that people tie up our legal system with such nonsense. I worry that any of these women might have sons or dauthers for that matter and are mentally abusing them with their diabolical message spreading hate, more of which we don’t need. Their children should be taken away from them and given to their fathers before more monsters are created. Even a bad father would be better than a mother with a the mentality of of anyone that belongs to an organization like NOW.
…and I thought Nazi Germany was bad.
It is time to start slaying and destroying these misguided women. REALLY.
These idiot women are destroying this nation. As God says, women CANNOT be empowered, yet that is just what the courts want to do.
DESTROY the women. Take them all out. Let’s go back to 19th century way of handling women.
