Finally, someone with some sense in the Madonna adoption case (I’ve blogged about this issue several times). The father — made into a victim by some in the Western media — has lashed out at “human rights” groups trying to keep his child in an African orphanage.
Money quote:
“Where were these people when David was struggling in the orphanage? These so-called human rights groups should leave my baby alone…As a father I have okayed this, I have no problem. The village has no problem. Who are they to cause trouble? Please let them stop.”
The child was sick after his biological mother died, so the father put the boy in an orphanage. His two other children had died of malaria. The father gave his complete consent after consulting the rest of the family.
As I’ve said before: Why is this an issue for human rights groups, unless they’re going to argue Madonna isn’t fit for parenthood (I’m sympathetic, but no one has said that)? These groups seem of the persuasion that losing one’s culture is worse than severe material privation. I’ve never experienced either myself, but I would guess anyone who holds views like these has never gone to bed hungry.
