MakeMagazine has articles about making biodiesel, and about using it in cars.
However, this week on their blog, they give warning to those using biodiesel that they could be fined by local and federal government regulators: for not paying fuel taxes.
Bob Teixeira decided it was time to take a stand against U.S. dependence on foreign oil.
So last fall the Charlotte musician and guitar instructor spent $1,200 to convert his 1981 diesel Mercedes to run on vegetable oil….
His reward, from a state that heavily promotes alternative fuels: a $1,000 fine last month for not paying motor fuel taxes.
There are questions about pollution and danger of fires from making biodiesel in your home, so government has to regulate it, but in these cases it seems more like punishing someone for a good deed… by some tax loving bureaucrat.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackOne would think the taxaholic authorities could see the merit in using ~any~ fuel that does not come from some foreign wells, most of which are owned by extremists of one stripe or another who not only hate us, they have us in their sights for major disruption or even outright destruction. It is clear that the minor loss of tax revenues is offset by a factor of dozens in that it cuts into the vast fortunes and control of the hatemongers not only in the middle east, but also those who are becoming just as beligerent in this hemisphere. I for one will register a strong complaint with my elected representatives, most of who trumpet the advantages of alternative fuels, and I will expect but will not accept the “lost tax revenues” angle of their replies. It is an insult to the mostly lower income people who have found this small way of taking themselves off the customer list of such people as are controlling the world oil reserves for political and even religious advantage.
So this means I should get a tax refund for gas I put in my lawnmower or ATV since it’s a non road-going vehicle, right? WRONG! In PA the exemption only applies to farmers. What BS!
