As a Former Soldier, Current Contractor and Aspiring Cop, I walk a weird line between sheepdog and wolf. I don't accept missions I don't feel comfortable with, yet I know many who do. Its a weird duality. In my opinion, "mercenaries" have the option to do good or bad, but it depends entirely on them, same with the military. Look at Sierra Leone. Mercenaries were actually the "good guys" over the rebels and local military.

Great blog, Nancy. Good points on the ineffectuality of UN Peacekeepers. I've been one.
The UN makes them comply with so many rules to protect others from possible corruption that they find themselves in the world's hot spots with their hands completely tied so that they couldn't even stop a rape if it happened right in front of them.
