True! The presidency has become a wasteful expense for the country. However, I would like to differ on the issue of electing the executives. Yes it seems right but unless the electorate are knowledgeable enough to know who would work and who wouldn't, this will backfire.

The other way is there should only be local elections, may be ward level. The election to municipal council or Panchayat, state legislature and to the Parliement should all be indirect and should come out of the ward. The rep to the municipality or to the state from the municipality and to the Parliament should be sent every time when they go on session. meaning there should not be a five year term for MLAs, MPs or such people. They should be elected or nominated by the local body for a session. they attend and then they come back. That is it. Next time some one else will represent the local body.

The ministers and the executives will come out of the parliament and they would elect them for a period of not more than 5 years. In the rarest of rare cases, a second term should be given. But otherwise, no second term for any one at the ministerial level. There should also be a parliament decision on the number of ministers and their assistants.

The party politics will vanish slowly in this and the hereditary traits also will slowly yield though there could be groups and 'interest' gatherings that could become coteries. With 500 and odd members it is still a long shot to bring that kind of grouping.
