Well now this is interesting – in a scary sort of way. New research shows that diabetics are at risk for mild memory loss that could be a prelude to Alzheimer’s.

My dad was diabetic and died of Alzheimer’s. About a year or so ago, I was diagnosed as being ‘pre-diabetic.’ It was strongly recommended that I lose weight. Weight issues also run in my family.

In recent months, I’ve lost a fair amount and continue to lose, having now been told I can “control” my diabetes with “diet.”

I’ve learned that eating anything sugary makes me feel sick, so that’s an effective incentive to skip dessert. I’ve always liked vegetables, so eating more of them is not a problem. The dog is delighted with our twice-daily brisk walk, although he’d lag and sniff every bush if I’d let him.

The research says 12 percent of Type 2 Diabetics over the age of 70 will suffer mild cognitive impairment of the “amnestic” type – the kind where you just don’t remember stuff, but not the type that leaves you wondering where am I and how did I get here. Dad’s Alzheimer’s resulted in both, of course, but he didn’t start to wander ’til he was 80.

According to the study, 5 million people in this country have Alzheimer’s. Nearly 21 million have diabetes. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic (www.mayoclinic.com) found that diabetics 70 years old and older who develop mild memory problems are three to four times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s.

For me, 70 is still a ways away, and I must be OK so far. I only had to check the study once to get the stats straight.
