Lynne Stewart is 67, a veteran lawyer, a grandmother and a cancer patient. She was convicted in February last year of lying to the government and conspiring with her client, Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, to convey messages to his militant disciples in Egypt and inciting them to violence. The sentence had been delayed while the veteran lawyer and grandmother underwent treatment for breast cancer.

In a letter to Judge John Koeltl before her sentencing, Stewart pleaded for a lenient sentence, insisting she was a well-intentioned lawyer who had made a lapse in judgement.
