For India’s Traditional Fishermen, Cellphones Deliver a Sea Change

Ah, the technological edge, delivered into the hands of hard-working people of the semi-third world, giving them an edge when it comes to dealing with the middle men. Repeat after me, “Knowledge is Power”.

I have read in other sources of how inexpensive and easily available cell-phones have revolutionized communications in back-country Africa, and let farmers better communicate and find a more profitable market for their output, just as the Indian fishermen are doing.

On the other hand, it has made it more difficult for those who concoct mystery and suspense novels, since it is very hard to strand a hero or heroine in a dangerous place… since one has to work out a way to separate them from the cellphone, first. Otherwise there’d be no suspense at all, since they could just call 9-11.
