Also being cognizant of who is around you helps reduce your risk.  Housekeepers, maintenance workers, painters, have all been involved with identity theft due to the convenience of information in thier surroundings. 

Regarding the mail, the US Postal Service arrested 6000 people last year for mail theft.  Think of how many they did not catch.</description>
