Wouldn it be nice and orderly if no one mentioned religion during a national campaign. If seperation of church and state really existed shouldn't all the federal campaign money be removed from those candiates that bring it up in the first place.

I believe that all religions have a place in the America. We should all be praying that the next election was to be held this year.

big·ot: Etymology: French: hypocrite, bigot: a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance.

These are the facts: According to CNN's Paula Zahn show that aired May 9th, 2007 and today's The New York Times Al Sharpton was "... responding specifically to a critique of religious belief in which Mr. Hitchens, referring to Mr. Romney and Mormonism, pointed out that one of the Republican presidential candidates was a member of a church that until the 1960s preached a 'sons of Ham' doctrine that denied the equality of people of African descent."

During the Paula Zahan show it was said that "It is all because of remarks Sharpton made this week during a debate over atheism with author Christopher Hitchens. They were arguing about the civil rights movement and what Hitchens sees as the inexcusable use of religion to justify slavery and separation of the races."

Sharpton said, "What I was responding to -- and it's interesting he did not attack Mr. Hitchens, who said this -- that he, Mr. Hitchens, had said that the Mormons had, in fact, had in their articles of faith that blacks were not to be part of an inclusiveness of God. And I said, don't worry about that anyway, if that's the case, that real believers, not atheists -- because the argument was over atheists. The argument was not about Mormon -- real believers, not atheists, was going to vote against him anyway, because I don't think Romney will win."

Sharpton went on to say "If, prior to '65, '78, whenever it was, they did not see blacks as equal, I don't believe that as real worshipers of God, because I don't believe God distinguishes between people. That's not bigotry. That is responding to their bigotry."

Sharpton also said, "Based on what he said -- clearly, I do not believe that anyone that really believes in God would have, at any point, believed that blacks were less than every other human being."

Sharpton made a final point: "Mr. Romney, since I didn't bring this up -- Hitchens did -- has opened the door for me to say, well, wait a minute. Is Hitchens right? Is this the history of the Mormons? And were you part of that history? Did you -- were you a part of this church before they renounced this?"

Sharpton's comment shows a lack of charity and respect for his Mormon brothers and sisters. He should apologize and ask forgiveness. After all, repentance is a true Christian principle.

"To me Al Sharpton’s biggest error here was saying publicly what many have been saying privately for months now, which is that because of his faith, Mitt Romney will not win the presidency."

Oh, if that was only true. If only people weren't given a pass when they announce that their worldview is based on the unsubstantiated, fantastic folklore of ignorant primitives -- we'd be disregarding Romney, Sharpton, and a lot of other dogmatic fools.

Intolerance of the moral cowardice that is willful ignorance is a virtue.

i can't believe that not one of you has pointed out the fact that the lds church denied all of its privileges of membership to people of african descent from 1830-1978. but they have no problem tossing around the word 'bigot'.

A true Christian wouldn't care what religion someone else is. People who hurt others physically, emotionally or mentally in the name of Christ aren't Christians. They are akin to the Islamic extremists who've hi-jacked the religion of Islam.

As for Al Sharpton, I can't grasp why this person is even relevant anymore. He's done more harm to Americans of African descent than any currently living Caucasian that I know of, and certainly more than anyone in the public eye.

Thank you so much for being enlightened enough to see that prejudice is prejudice, whether it's against white, black, asian, Mormon, Jew, or Hindu. Living in a highly Mormon-populated area, people seem to think that just because there are more of them, the Mormons are free game.
I have always had problems with Al Sharpton and his "preaching" but this cements my belief in further. He should just admit to what he said and apologize for it. That's what a decent person would do. If Don Imus can do it, why can't he? Or is he "above" asking for forgiveness?

what a hypocrite. it's fine for him to sling around accusations of racism, but no one can point out his own intolerance? and in response to John above--what non-religious liberals are voting for hindu, buddhist or muslim candidates? There has NEVER been a president of the us with non-christian ties, Dem or Republican--so before you go slinging around accusations. If you ask me, religion should be completely out of the picture...people's beliefs are people's beliefs. No one's calling Sharpton a Jesus freak, so he should lay off the bigoted comments himself. As an atheist conservative, I'd much rather see Barack Obama (with his ethnic ties to a different religion, I might point out) as a president than Hilary Clinton.
but back to the point, sharpton's got a big mouth and he needs to learn to restrain himself. he ALWAYS leads the charge, the "crusade" if you will, to eliminate bigotry in others; maybe he should start at home.

As bigotted as Sharpton's comments reveal him to be, I'm impressed with Romney's response. The Apostle Paul knew about enemies. Romans 12:20: "Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head." So please send Rev Al some green Jell-O and caffeine-free soda.

I think Rev Sharpton should go on Don Imus's new show that will soon air and beg for forgiveness. Now the shoe is on the other foot. Al Sharpton is a disgrace of the first degree. No matter what you think about Mormons, Jews, or whatever religion, no one has the right to preach about equality and not practice. Al shows that he will say whatever needs to be said at the moment. He has no position that is consistant. Just whatever makes him money and noterity. If you're waiting for Al to come help you just get the press and money available and he'll be there.

Interesting comments. I wonder if the "religious" right would ever vote for a Jew, Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim, Sikh, Shinto, etc., or any other religion that wasn't Christian. If not, then they are all just as big of bigots as Al Sharpton. This is even more ironic in that Mormons believe in J.C. (just look at their official name: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints), the Bible, etc. but can't join the "club" that was formed by the select "in-Christians". Who are the bigots? Look in the mirror.
