High levels of mercury in oily fish like, salmon, mackerel and sardine, increases the risk of delivering babies prematurely, in pregnant women, according to a new study published in the journal ‘Environmental Health Perspectives’. The findings of this study, which looked at 1,024 pregnant women living in Michigan, United States, has prompted scientists to warn pregnant women, to avoid consuming oily fish. The findings, however, contradicts other studies, which suggest that eating more fish can increase the birth weight and brainpower of babies and help in preventing premature births.

Another report by BBC has warned that pregnant women should avoid eating shark, marlin or swordfish, since they contain high levels of mercury and other pollutants.
