Wait, it gets better: the CSD session that the Africans would like Zimbabwe to host would run under the theme "sustainable land use and agriculture." Zimbabwe is the very poster child of disasterous land use policy, with Mugabe reducing the country from a bread basket to a beggar nation dependent on World Food Program handouts (courtesy of the U.S. and UK).

But maybe you're right, Bongani, let's leave the poor despotic state alone. In fact, let's have Iran host a forum on nuclear transparency and cooperation with the IAEA. Why not appoint North Korea chair of a commission on freedom of speech and the press? Myanmar could organize a working group on peaceful democratic government transition, while Saudi Arabia plays host to a feminist round table. Then the UN could truly live up to what many have come to expect of it.

One wonders are making such a fuss about Zimbabwe chairing the CSD16. Zimbabwe is a member of the UN, and CSD and have a right to chair any Committee or Commission within the UN. Just for example Iraq is chairing the Third Committee that deals with Human Rights issues. The UK and the USA are members of the Un Security Council despite their record in violating international law that has led to the current situation in Iraq. Furthermore UK is a member of the Human Rights Commission despite their record on human rights in Iraq and in Northern Island. Come on leave Zimbabwe alone.

My dear blogger, you missed a zero. Inflation in Zimbabwe is currently at around 2,200%. It is expected to surpass 4,000% by the IMF by the end of this year. Thoughts, prayers, well wishing, and constant press are all deeply appreciated.
