India’s PM Manmohan Singh has indirectly hinted that the US is responsible for India’s continued absence from the UNSC.
“If there is to be a reform of the Security Council, there is growing support for the view that countries like India must find their place. But having said that, I would like to say that those in power do not like to give up power and, therefore, I think some big powers have not made up their mind. This was why the process of reform still had a long way to go“.
It does not require a rocket scientist to figure out, which big powers are against India’s candidacy. Russia, France and UK have openly supported India’s bid. The official circles vouch for the fact that China is not averse to the idea either. This leaves Uncle Sam to bear the blame.
India is particularly buoyed by the positive response from the EU. Finland, the presiding country for the EU, has also joined the nations in support of India’s candidature. With India’s growing stature, I think it’s just a matter of time, when US realizes the futitlity in its India-specific policy. Moreover, at times when the US is facing the heat from various quarters, it could ill-afford to lose one of its natural allies.
