Of late, Dalits, by the thousands, are converting to Budhism and Christianity in India.

The only grouse of these largely Hindu dalits (untouchables) is the continued prevalence of caste-system in the ancient Hindu society. Despite being banned by the Indian Constitution, untouchability is still being practized in India in some form or the other. Illiteracy is considered as the main contributor to this malaise but the stubborn Indian caste-system is equally to blame for the mess that has eternalized this unholy institution and contributed to the overall regressive development of the nation over the years.

To quote a dalit, “The local priest tells me if I was a good dalit in this life, then in my next life I can be born into a better part of society. I say, why wait?”
