Unlike with the previous regimes, Rwanda’s current official view is that Rwandans are one and the same people, with the law not recognising the identities of Hutu, Tutsi and Twa.
To the perception of many inside and outside Rwanda, however, is the notion of the identities being “ethnic” groups, with its persistence mainly being perpetuated by the media.
To watch CNN or listen to the BBC one will consistently hear the Hutu and Tutsi being referred to as “makabila” (tribes) in a Kiswahili Service news item, or as “ethnic” in the World Service.
It is the same with other local and international media, and no less the authoritative magazines such as the Economist.
There is also the example of the Kenyan scholar, Prof. Ali Mazrui, not too long ago in Kigali where he delivered a controversial lecture that made it seem almost irredeemable the assumed “tribal” or “ethnic” polarities between the Hutu and Tutsi. He compared them with ethnically dual societies such as Belgium (i.e., between the Flemish and the Walloons), or the war-torn Sri Lanka between the Tamils and the Sinhalese, among others.
Who, then, are the Hutu and Tutsi?
The answer lies in Rwanda’s history, where these opposing views form the subject of much scholarly debate, of which it may serve to consider a few of the arguments.
Rwanda has always had the categories Hutu, Tutsi and Twa. The eked a living as hunter-gatherers as well as being notable artisans, with the Hutu mainly practicing agriculture, and the Tutsi being mainly pastoralist and constituting the ruling class and nobility.
However, these were mobile categories, as the Hutu who gained wealth in cattle could become a Tutsi, and likewise a Tutsi who lost his wealth could become a Hutu.
Due to the Twa’s tiny number and their very limited influence in the history of Rwanda, they have tended to be ignored leaving the Hutu and Tutsi as the main subjects in the Rwanda discourse.
However, without discounting the Twa, the Kenyan historian Prof. Bethwell Ogot, an authority on the peoples of East and Central Africa notes in the United Nations Education, Science and Cultural Organisation’s (UNESCO) corpus on the history of Africa, that despite the ascribed activities of the of the Hutu and Tutsi, agriculturalists and pastoralists had long inhabited the region for eons.
He nevertheless observes that, though this be the case, archaeological evidence suggests that from about the 15th Century pastoralist groups began immigrating in considerable numbers into the Great Lakes Region.
Prof. Ogot’s assertion about the immigration of pastoralists into the region may provide the template where may be drawn the battleline between those who propound the “distinct difference” and the “no difference” between the Hutu and Tutsi.
It seems obvious, to physically appreciate them, as it did to explorers such as John Hanning Speke, followed by the German and Belgian colonialists and the Roman Catholic missionaries, that the much taller, slender and “fine featured” Tutsi could not be the same with the short, stocky and “coarse featured” Hutu; giving rise to the notion that they must have come of different ancestors.
Though it is not a definite fact, some oft quoted studies seem to confirm the migration hypothesis. For instance, as they have been synthesized by the Ugandan scholar of the Great Lakes Region, Prof. Mahmood Mamdani, in his book, When Victims Become Killers: Colonialism, Nativism, and the Genocide in Rwanda, one physical anthropology survey on the “Genetics and History of Sub-Saharan Africa” concludes that the Tutsi and Hima of Uganda are closer genetically to the Somali and Ethiopians.
This observation seems to gain some credence in another study finding that, much like the pastoralist Somali and Ethiopians in their mosquito-free hot climates in the Horn of Africa, the Tutsi, unlike the supposedly “Bantu” Hutu, do not exhibit the sickle cell trait found in the blood that is necessary for survival in malarial environments.
Other studies point out the ability among adults to digest the milk sugar, lactose. The ability to digest lactose is limited in most human populations, except in milk dependent nomadic desert populations, among whom the cattle herding Tutsi may be included. Three out of four Tutsi exhibit this trait, as compared to one out of three Hutu.
These genetically determined characteristics of “Cushitic” looks, sickle cell traits and ability to digest lactose may seem watertight as scientific proof, but they do not explain whether the Tutsi migrated or not, let alone being cousins to the Somali and Ethiopians.
Which brings in the counter arguments of those who propound the “no difference” hypothesis. They hold that it is equally possible to have these genetic traits without having migrated from anywhere.
They argue that the Hutu and Tutsi difference is a result characteristic of privileged classes throughout history through selective feeding and, or, breeding.
The French social geographer, Dominique Franche, writing in an article in the Le Monde Diplomatique, pointed out that the 12-centimetre difference in average height found by colonial physical anthropologists and said to be differentiate Hutu from Tutsi was “exactly the same difference that existed in France between a conscript and a senator in 1815.”
The social geographer concludes that the difference in height can be explained by their different lifestyles and eating habits, with sexual selection playing an important role in the ideals of beauty that might include height and looks. In this conclusion may be enjoined the iconic scholar, Dr Walter Rodney, in his popular book, How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, that the difference is most likely selective feeding and breeding.
The proponents of “no difference” also pose the problematic that, even if, for the sake of argument, it was true that the migration hypothesis holds, of what particular significance is it in today’s Rwanda?
The simple, incontrovertible reality is that the Hutu and Tutsi shared and continue to share the same culture and clans, speak the same language; lived and continue to live on the same “a thousand hills,” cohabited and intermarried each other.
Drawing from this fact many Hutu look like Tutsi and vice versa, so that to a large extent it is difficult to tell them apart, despite the aforementioned genetic ascriptions.
Also, the Banyarwanda traditionally ascribe to the patriarchal ideology that children born of intermarriages, say born of a Hutu father, automatically became Hutu and vice versa. There are not “Hutsi”, i.e., both Hutu and Tutsi. You were Hutu or Tutsi because you were constructed so in the institutional medium of the patriarchal family you were born.
The above constitute only a few of the arguments, but as to this vexed issue of who Hutu, Tutsi or Banyarwanda (Rwandans), it may seem difficult for many to decide.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackInteresting article!! Being from Rwanda, I would be interested in knowing the origin of Hutu then. It looks like this article is focusing more on the origin of Tutsi and I am very supprised by this article especially the lactose!! . Some people talk about Hutu being from somewhere in Central Africa or Cameroun but I frankly see a big difference in posture of people from this region. I can see how the Hima, Somalia and Ethiopia might be related to Tutsi but still wonder about the skin color. Could it be that Hutu came from some mixte marriage of two ethinic groups? How would explain the one in three whose body digest the milk product? I don’t buy into the idea of colonizers creating the problem between the two group. The history tells us that this problem existed way before the arrival of Beligians but they made things worse.
Tutsi origin to the horn of africa is normal since the origin of man is in the horn of africa.Infact mankind’s origin is here as evidence from achaelogy shows. It is possible all human beings originated from eastern africa but took different directions. Some reconnected up in America,Australia,South Africa,Rwanda etc etc….WHAT IS WRONG OR RIGHT WITH THIS?
I am tutsi and while i was reading this article all i could think was that this is a bunch of bs that tutsi’s are the same as hutu and we are the same people? please cut the crap i am light skinned, have thin lips, a small long nose similar to thoose of a white person, and have naturally wavy hair that is up to my lower back and you try to tell me that i am exactly the same as the hutus that have big noses nappy hair and are dark and short please. tutsi’s are from ethiopia or maybe somalia and are a part of the oromo tribe if you look at tutsi’s and the oromos you honestly cant tell the difference. if you dont belive me ask my grandma who even tells me stories of her ansestors moving from ethiopia.. so just cut the crap hutus and tutsis are NOTHING alike oh and by the way it offends me when people say stupid shit like that.
Bethany, no offense but your attitude is the exact reason why the Rwanda genocide existed. To feel so much hatred to be compared to another group of people is crazy. If you are living in the same country you are the same race as your neighbor. You might have long hair and a small nose but who cares? A person with flat noses and dark skinned could be your brother…you are all from the beautiful country Rwanda and that should be important..and oh by the way I’m not even a hutu or tutsi…I’m American with my ancestors from Cuba and Haiti.
What does any of this have to do with the horrible genocide they are perpetrating upon one another?
What is the reason for all of the death. I can understand hatred and racism. How do you end it?
Can the Tutsi Hutu, and Twa live in peace in Rwanda?
Because the genocide is ugly and offensive, it cheapens life entirely. Each one of the dead had the capacity to love, and resist the evil of death, I don’t care who they were. Please somebody tell my why they are killing each other?
Thank you
This debate about Tutsi and Hutu origin takes different directions as people get emotional and hence lose the point. It is important that dna analysts do a thorough blood analysis of the Tutsi especially. The Tutsi certainly look and behave very differently from the Hutu. The genocides have been easy to carryout simply because the two groups recognise each other instantly!!This should wake up the doubting Thomases that there is definately fundamental difference between the two groups. We who are from Rwanda can even tell differences from dental features, skin type, eye looks, hair, fingers, lips, etc The Tutsi certainly look like Somalis. How do you explain the extra height of the two grops, the dental similarity ie protruding teeth in many cases, the curly hair, the extra soft skin, the sharp noses, and the small bones of the arms? I dont need to be an artist to see this.Look at the high tendency of the tutsi population taking to smoking both Men and women, something the Hutu people cant tolerate. The Tutsi habit of spitting that I find alot in Ethiopia and Somalia and is hated by the Hutu. The tendency of the Tutsi to be more reserved and quite unlike the very loud Hutu.I am very frank on this, the two groups are and have never been the same.Even if the Tutsi may not be related to the Ethiopians or Somali they are certainly very similar. The tutsi followed the River Nile in serch of water and pastuer. This seems more likely.Thats why the Bahima of Uganda have never ben deceived that they are one with the idegenous banyankole population. How come in Rwanda this lie is being pedalled? It is because in Rwanda it has become political.Yet it is true that the Tutsi and Hima are one and the same.Hutu and Tutsi are as different as black is to white, choose to hate the fact but we have to live with it and respect each group for who they are.Choosing to ignore the fact is like hating the rain simply because you once slid and fell in it.Tutsis be proud of who you are and Hutus be proud of who you are,but dont pretend to be the same.I am tired of going to Addis and they speak to me in Amaharic,We need to know who we are.
Tutsi are 100 % of African origin, (80% E1b1a) related to Hutu’s and other Bantu people, (4% E3, 1% E1b1b), which is less than 5% related to Oromo/Somali , and 15% B which is indigenous pastoral Great Lakes people.
In other words Tutsi have more in common genetically with Hutu and Zulu than they do with Oromo and Somali. Their phenotype differences is a matter of the slight 15 percent indigenous pastoral peoples genes (the original people of Western Rift valley), and their dietary habits of more than 1000 years (milk consumption)and mate selection.
Another example of how two people can share the same genes and look completely different is the difference between Tigrinya people and Oromo/Somali people. Where as they both are both East Africans genetic relatives E1b1b, Tigrinya tend to be shorters and more stout and overall lighter skinned, while Oromo/Somali tend to be taller and darker skin.
The same way some Tutsi want to claim that they are more related to Oromo/Somali, when in fact their closest relatives are Hutu and the rest of Bantu Africans is the same way that some Tigrinya’s want to claim they are more related to Arabs, when in fact their closet relatives are firstly Oromo-Somali, than Berber/Tuareg and than Bantu-Africans/West Africans, before even a hint of Arab relation
The genetic stuff does not make much sense given that we have had several migrations. Dna cannot solve population studies and if you want to prove this look at the genetic map of the world and you will get devastatingly confused.dna can apply very well on immediate links like paternal check ups, otherwise beyond that you get into trouble. Those who argue against the tutsi somali link are mainly those who have not interacted with the tutsi closely to appreciate the glaring differences. It is crystal clear that they are different from Hutu and Bantu.Wheather they are Bantu or not is what we want to know. otherwise how was the genocide carried out with pinpoint accuracy if the two groups are the same. I saw bands of hutus come from far away places and to identify the tutsi was and is always easy. How was this possible if they are the same or even slightly related? The kikuyus are slightly related to kissis but take it that you cannot accurately distinguish the two. The genocide in Rwanda was possible at such a great magnitude because the tutsi are very very different. Those who are busy opposing this are doing it for reasons difficult to fathom that is if they are not mocking a situation that should be well reserched and help us the tutsi get to the bottom of this and move on knowledgeably.Identifying the tutsi in Rwanda is like looking for indians amongst whites. The two are different but with some similarities.
I see all people say whether Tutsi or Hutu as nothing! The whole issue is what have you done yourself that differentiate you from another? What have you done for your family and your country in as far as development is concerned? What does it benefit you from being a Hutu or Tutsi. Wake up guys we are in dot.com generation. If u sleep, nobody will wake you up. Stand-up, go work and have a wonderful life. What else, differences? Nothing, what matters is what you are not who you are. Nice time. Lets go work for our betterness. Thank you.
The tutsi are most related to Hutus. They have the E3a dna not E3b. They are not related to us but only look like us East African.
I dont pleave dna solving this matter deffintlly tutsi are Oroma Gaala wich other somali,s fought 7 centry they scaped war like we do now
For those of you who ask how the genocide was caried with such presiceness it’s because the Belgians made everyone carry race cards that stated wheather a person was Hutu or Tutsi, duh! Any ways I am not surprised by the DNA test that proved how gentically close the Hutu and Tutsi are, if us Tutsi were migrants how could we forget our language and culture? And I am calling Bethany out right now as not being a real Tutsi, yeah we have fine features but we have really nappy hair, even if it grows long, I have never heard of any migrational stories though my dad taught me other myths (the bat and the sun )etc. Perhaps my dad forgot them, I can’t ask my grandparents since i lost the ones on my dad’s side guring the genocide about a year before I was born and my other set live in Burundi. I would be really upset to fond out that you are lieing, I hate when Somali are ethioypians go online and pretend to be us to cause divison for there own selfish reasons. Especially when so many people back in Rwanda are trying to patch things up living in reconcilation camps. Like president Kegame said “I am not Tutsi and
I am not Hutu I am Rwandan” I wanna go live their when I grow up so bad!:(
,Rwandan genocide reminds us how cruel we human beings can be towards other fellow human beings. No sane human being, would ever want that kind of fate to befall even those one might consider as one enemies. Kagame and his fellow Rwandans have a great task ahead of them and I am sure they are up to the task, as time has shown this to be the case,Titiana should rest assured that Somalis, like other people, wish Rwandans good luck in their endeavours to build up a nation state that can stand, the vicitude of time. It is however wrong for Titiana to imagine that Somalis wish Rwandans ill by throwing the spanner in the works. Hope your dream of growing up in Rwanda will be granted by God. My advice: Dont hate. Hate leads to blindness
This Blog is so incredibly sad. As a black person living in America of Caribbean decent , I now fully understand why Africa as a continent is so far behind. Yes it stems from racism, but it also stems from discord and ignorance of many of its natives. Many Africans regardless of region share more genetic similarities than differences regardless of phenotypical expressions. Some Ethiopians and other East Africans think they are better than West Africans vice versus. Imagine if these fools were united and refused to deny there brother, how much progress the continent could make. The Tutsi and Hutus allowed the wicked Belgium to divide and conquer brothers. Bethany is a classic example of stupidity. Tribal primitive science trumps what is modern( ancestral DNA).
Who says a flat nose and short stature is ugly? Who says? Did God say? or did did the Belgium say? Were you dumb enough to believe them?
RISE ABOVE SMALL THINGS!Bob marley says;’emancipate your self from mental slavery’-looking like the ‘whites’doesnot make you any better or worse.you are wasting too much time in identifying your self from your fellow human being in the same coutry,at the end, what is it going to help?will the difference between Hutu,Tutsi and Twa bring food on your plate,or construct roads?you are just 3 ethinic groups speaking the same language, why dont you take advantage of this and build your nation?dont be shallow minded, think of a united future Rwanda.we people outside Rwanda are concerned that if sanity among insane people like BETHANY is not restored,Rwandans will not be happy in their country.
