No, I disagree somwhat. The first era of Star Trek is over. We probably will never see the old characters we knew. Shatner may show up for a cameo.
The basic canon will stay. The idea of Star Trek. Starfleet. Klingons. The Enterprise. Warp Drive. Holodeck. Phasers. Romulans. Borg.
But everything is open to new creative interpretation for the next generation of fans.
Think of it this way. Batman had a popular TV show in the 1950s. There were the Tim Burton Batman movies. They constatnyl reinvented things. The Batman Begins relaunch did it again.
"Star Trek" will start over, and maybe a lot of the same stories will be told again, except in a new and exciting and update fashion. That will be the art of it. Pleasing past fans will not be a priority, but getting in new fans. Both can be happy. But don't expect TOS or TNG or DS9 and ENT or VOY or any of the previous 10 movies to be considered as a Bible or needing to be built on. I don't anything will be seriously disrespected. But those are past artistic subjects.
"Star Trek" due in 2008 will be competely new take.
