A copy of the 1477 edition of Claudius Ptolemy’s landmark atlas has sold for a new record of $3.9 million at an auction in London earlier this week. The atlas is known as the very first atlas ever printed and is one of only two known to still exist in private hands. The atlas absolutely dominated the previous record of $2.7 million for an atlas auctioned at Sotheby’s in October 2005. Before being auctioned, the atlas belonged to the family of Lord Wardington, a British map and atlas collector who died last year.
