There is now reporting in the media -- the NY Times Magazine has a major article on Yingling's critique, and the likely costs to him for voicing it. I am not "army material." I have never had any interest in joining the military. In fact, they'd discharge me for being gay (plus having HIV wouldn't help). I'm at best conflicted about the role of anyone's military force in a modern world, and tend to view them as causing many more problems than they solve. That said, I hope that officers like Lt. Col Yingling will be successful, if only that they would not send young people into battle under-equiped, ill-trained only to be injured and returned to an inadequate VA hospital system that is also under-funded. That is the least that we must offer young people who enter the army as volunteers and serve in places where they are in constant danger. Our current government is all starry-eyed over the glory of war, but in the end cares nothing for the individual soldiers who are paying with their lives. That is a disgrace.
