If President Obama was serious about going green he would instruct congress to deal with ballast water legislation that was held up in the senate in 2008. One Senator from a state that imports consumer goods and moves oil along its coast objected because she did not want it to over ride the time line for stricter regulations in her state. Now as time has passed her objections have less relevance, but the president is content to let our military purpose a couple decade plan.
With a strong national goal and policy to quickly fix the ballast water problem, the obvious carbon foot prints and polluted water left by old ships as they deliver fossil fuels and foreign consumer goods would be slowed dramatically. New green technology geared toward energy independence should become more cost effective to develop. The political will may not be in Congress to protect America because this is not a republican, democrat issue. If the Coast Guard will not do it, the only option will be a president who puts America before globalization. This is oil and consumer goods being internationally and domestically transported by ships and an American issue of security and freedom, unfortunately the money lobby can remain silent as they are on the same side. Maybe if we were not dependent on China to buy our treasury notes, or Saudi Arabia really wanted their waters kept clean we could afford the strong protections the Coast Guards needs for the ability to complete this mission. The impact that implementation of a strong policy, with a fast time line for cleaned water disposal only, will have on shipping, may change the economic dynamics of world trade and also protect our countries environment and health for future generations.
New technologies required for environmental friendly shipping should cost those wishing to bring goods into our country more money, not those who wish to protect our country from ecological destruction resulting from economic globalization to help foreign economies. Sincerely, Don Mitchel

I have witnessed global warming for years. Coming from Alaska, I have seen glaciers retreat. I came across this video that shows global warming in action here: http://www.filmbaby.com/films/4148. I showed my former global warming skeptic friends this movie and they all now believe it is happening at an alarming rate.

Is "...the consensus of scientists agree that greenhouse gases cause global warming" a true statement?

Does climate change involve difficult complicated science?

Is it reasonable for anyone anywhere have an opinion on climate change?

Are opinion surveys on whether you believe climate change is important or urgent reasonable and valid means of forming public opinion and public policy?

Are legislators qualified to rule on public policy in re to changing behavior and taxing citizens on climate change slash / global warming?

As a general matter is science determined based on opinions or demonstrable scientific evidence?

Should Obama's Secretary Chu speak publicly as he did recently in support of geoengineering solutions such as painting rooftops white? Regardless of his credentials. Before the science is weighed.

Is opinion "knowledge" and is knowledge "truth"?

People who know nothing of science (or are trained in science but speaking in ways that are not scientific or outside of their qualifications) or the Scientific Method but aver opinions based on how some idea agrees with preconceived notions in their stomach - mind should first go back and science along with development of logical philosophy / logical mathematics going back to Plato, Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas, George Berkeley, David Hume, Bertrand Russell, Alfred North Whitehead, AJ Ayer, William James, Charles Sanders Peirce, John Dewey, Frank Ramsey, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Karl Popper, and on and on.

Otherwise the notion that anyone / you are permitted to have opinions is laughable and 100% meaningless...

Trying To Take Internet and Free Speech From You!

Democrats have introduced a Bill HR 1966 to try and take away the Internet and Free speech from the American people! If this Bill gets passed you won't even recognize the Internet 2 they'll introduce to you - it will be little more than a TV monitor on your desk top as they want to stop people from being able to communicate on the net!
Please telephone, write to and visit your congressman and Senator and tell them to vote against Bill HR 1966 !

Write to your Congressmen and Senators and urgently request that they vote NO to Bill HR 1966

i agree. if you truly want to help, do something to help. i believe that america, everyday, is getting more and more lazy with everything. we can always help the world. just one step at a time, and we can really make a change and help the world. "trust me" i know what you mean.

Dear Mr. Easley,
I dont take your article as something i would like fot other citizens of this country to read. My reasons are the following:
Americans, we need someone to motivate us to do something. If we read an article and they are already talking bad of how Obamas plan wont work, then everyboy will give up or wont give it a chance to work. Secondly, there are Americans who actually do care about this planet. Earth is really our true home, so we better stop being babies about it and act as the adults we are. We have to face the fact that if no one does it we have to do it. Its true, consumption does have to do with it. Just like i said, if we really want to do something about we can. I am a normal college student, but the only difference is that... im making a difference. im involved with a group of students to change our community to take a look of what happening to our home. At first we thought no one would listen to us, but for our surprice there were a lot of people who belive in us and now our group has over 200 ppl involed in making our home a better place to live.

Like a wound that heals itself, nature will heal the planet if global warming is left unchecked, even if billions of lives have to be sacrificed.

Automakers are seeking a $75 billion bailout from the Obama administration. Obama should take this opportunity to make the automakers commit on producing energy efficient automobiles, otherwise let the existing industry collapse and built a new energy efficient auto industry.

Its easy to talk about the problem but hard to actually fix it. And in this case there is no one easy answer to solve global climate change. If you guys are interested in solving economic and political problems go to 99problems.org

GLOBAL WARMING CAN BE REVERSED WITHIN 5 YEARS

if we can increase the humus content of the world's agricultural lands by just 1 %, yes one percent per year for 5 years. This according to professor Raggam of Graz University Austria.
Humus is a carbon sink. Agri chemicals have depleted the humus over the last 100 years to almost nothing. This can be reversed with just
5 kg per hectare per year of our organic products which can be dissolved in water and applied to fields with regular irrigation eqipment or be plane.
Our products stimulate the bacteria needed to break down organic materials into humus.

IN ADDITION HUMUS IS LIKE A SPONGE HOLDING WATER PROTECTING THE CROPS AGAINST DROUGHTS! Forest fires could be reduced. (California)

Crops yields increase. A test in Canada by a University confirmed 30% more yield of corn.
This could free lands for growing bio fuels without endangering the food supply!

Farmers could earn carbon credits.
etc.etc.

Please reply so we can establish contact and submit to you complete information and test results.

To Maria.

Yes the environment will get worse but not enough to cause any problems. I have no clue how old you are but lets say you were 10. by the time your 100 the global temperature will have gone up by 1 degree, and I'm seious. it is not that big a change in the temperature to do any real damage on the environment. its not such a big deal. But we do want to keep our environment safe but Obama is acting like if we don't change now we will all die tommorow.

I think Senator Obama fully understands the importance and the commitment of the situation, as well as how delicate it all can be. Obama is very suttle and keeps to neutral territory, bending towards clean technologies, but not completely crossing the lines either. He understands how important the dirty industries are, so he keeps them, but at a high price. I don't think it will be enough to achieve his goal of helping to put of global warming, but at the moment- what else can we do? Yeah, if i were in his place i would probably have no choice but to do the same thing, but it doesn't leave us very satisfied. Some people asked me "will it be enough?", and i always tried to be truthful. "No, it won't be enough." So, that's that. Bam. Global Warming, i will get you i swear, but not with Obama in the house.

I hope you don't misinterpret me. Obama is close to powerless here, but he still knows how to handle it better then McCain. Republicans just can't do green. Period.

I found this quite odd. I mean why does he bother. yes the global temperatures have gone up but my small amounts (about 0.6 degrees since the early 1900s). another thing is it is called "global" warming. not everywhere on earth is getting warmer, just some places. and again in small amounts. One more thing, studies show that it was a lot hotter in the middle ages than it is today and they didn't have cars or air polutants like we do. therfore I say global warming is mostly bogus. it is real but to have any segnifacent chenges in the climate it would take hudreds of years to be able to say that bad things are happening because the temperature is too hot.

The replies on what he's going to do is vague without any real details. It just sounds like an idea and I think we all know that big business like the oil companies and auto makers will do what they can to get in the way.

They done it before to destroy the wonderfully efficient, clean and favorable electric car- because they realized it hurts their profits. Fighting big business that's tied into our government is hard. I don't know if he's going to do it... or even if he's willing to do it.

Great article. I enjoyed reading it.

I think we need to know what our candidates stand for on the issues as well so I created a site to track presidential candidates and the first article is always the current scorecard of their political stances. Check it out. http://www.candidatepositions.com

I think it is a knee-jerk left reaction to discount carbon trading as one part of an energy strategy. I also think there is too much emphasis being placed on policy proposals coming from the candidates. None of the proposals are worth the paper it is printed on. What matters is what can be passed which is something that will be determined by the political process.

Obama has the most progressive voting record, and his biography demonstrates commitment to progressive values. I think he is the most electable and will have the strongest coattails.

Yes, when you look at the plans from all the candidates from either party, no one wants to cut consumption, but that is what needs to be done.

Yesterday Sen. Chris Dodd was in town, and I asked him about his energy policy plan. He did mention a carbon tax, and forcing automobile companes to increase fuel efficiencies. Public transportation and lowering speed limits was not mentioned in his comments to me, nor were other ways to directly lower consumption. While not specifically stated, I got a sense from him that corporate America was the evil behind all this. I specifically asked him what he was going to ask of the American people in dealing with our energy crisis, and he was vague in responding to that.
