This piece left out the part of Thompson's plan that covers the event that Iraq votes to keep U.S. troops there, that would include a vast build up of forces. When pressed about details of how he could accomplish that, given the breaking point our military is currently at, he sidestepped the question and launched into unveiling his "welfare to war" plan...

The weaknesses of welfare reform were exposed when hard times hit? What? If anything, hard times demonstrate the need for welfare reform.

For the first time, former welfare recipients had job skills needed to find work in a tougher economy. And jobs and working are vital to economic success. The dirty little secret of the AFDC program was that everyone on welfare lived below the poverty line. Everybody.

Welfare reform is giving people a reason to work - and the tools they need to succeed. We are only 11 years into it - which is a pittance of what is needed to reverse 30-plus years of failed social policy of the welfare state.

For this, Thompson should be commended. He led the way in reforming welfare in America. That is not an accomplishment that should in anyway be dismissed.
