Cricket Commentators such as Krishnamachari Srikkanth and Ajay Jadeja have taken the side of Sachin in the ongoing Players-Coach controversy in India.. But their logic to support Sachin is totally flawed.
Ajay Jadeja says ” ..I don’t even want to listen to the other side. What Sachin says must be true..”.
Srikkanth says “..Only an Indian Coach can understand how Indian players feel…Greg is responsible for the declining performance of 3 key players namely Sehwag, Harbhajan and Irfan because he made them feel insecure. .”.
Both these players are echoing the voice of blind faith coming out of fan following or patriotic fervour. There is no doubt that Sachin, Saurav as well as Sehwag have given wonderful displays in the past. But at this point of time, a professional approach would be to seek an answer to the question, “If we forget past performances, will Sachin and Sehwag deserve a place in the team? The answer is obvious.
Sachin says that he feels hurt by the suggestion that he may lack the right attitude. Let him remember that thousands of fans have felt more hurt by his lack of performance in the World Cup and many other recent matches. Just because he was once a great player (and perhaps one of the greatest India has produced), it does not mean that he should not be made to feel hurt.
This is not the first time Sachin has displayed displeasure against his Captain/management for losing on a personal milestone. We remember that he did express his displeasure in a press conference when he lost an opportunity to score a double hundred in Pakistan through a declaration. It is therefore not difficult to imagine that he may now be feeling insecure with Greg Chappell demanding performance from all the players.
Public in India as well as Cricket Commentators and Experts have wrongly painted the prevailing dispute as between an “Australian Coach” and “Indian Players”. They have therefore taken sides based on their patriotic leanings. I believe that the issue is different.
The issue is “Could India have performed better?” ..if the players had considered the team requirements more than their individual requirements and they were more hungry for runs and wickets than the Pepsi bottles in the ads. In this context it is “What an Australian Coach like Chappell says” and “What and Indian player like Sachin says?. Let us not confuse the issue as “Australia Vs India”.
It is shameful that Sachin instead of owning responsibility as the most experienced player in the team and hanging up his boots, should gbe ganging up against the Coach as if he could have gone to the middle and batted for India against Bangladesh.
I hope that the Board takes a decision on the future of Indian Cricket based on what is good for India rather than what is good for Sachin. I strongly feel that Dravid lost the match against Bangladesh because he took his decisions based on what was good for Sehwag rather than what was good for India. Let us not make a similar mistake now. What is important is India and not Sachin…and Sachin is not India.
In this connection some suggestions floated by Sharad Pawar and Chandu Borde as well as the emergence of Subhash Chandra as a promoter of a new league have good potential for further consideration.
It is not realistic to expect that Chappell would continue as the Coach of India, but he has to be credited for having brought some of the ills of Indian Cricket into open and perhaps India will come out stronger as a result of this show down if our response is professional.
The starting point for this transformation is to shed our thought that “Sachin is God”, “Saurav is the Prince” and “Sehwag is the Nawab”.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackYour views are short sighted and you missed out to take the complete picture. Issue is not only with Sachin vs Greg. Its the whole unit vs Greg. One of the most important aspects in coaching the team is MAN managment. Greg terribly failed in this aspect. Complete unit is unhappy with Greg. Even a reasonably performing Yuvaraj too has some issues with Greg. Its how you give the medicine and set the things right.
Greg exit should be a must. We should not let our hair into the hands of Greg.
Coming to our seniors, they need to told that their future depends on their performance. If they are not performing, they needs to be sacked out. No doubts about it
No one is above the team. I think the agents of teh players are now running the BCCI
I can agree with the comments. It appears most of the senior cricketers have gone past their ‘Use By Date’ and are living on their past laurels. Commercial arrangements and endorsements and egos fueled by ex cricketers and players agents are making these cricketers live in ‘make believe’ world. I think that is the reality. When Greg is tough with them they become cry babies. I expected some accountability from these mega stars but none is forthcoming. Idon’t think it is Greg Vs players issue.
Greg submitted his resignation. THANK GOD.
No the real concern for the BCCI to set things right. More than the game, its the attitude how we approach. We are very weak in our approach & mind set. Viv Richards has rightly pointed it out.
With respect to our seniors, One day they need to hand their boots. They need to do it when they were in right form. I hope (Sachin, Ganguly & Dravid) understands this and score freely before they bow out of the scene after 2 or 3 series
Hi,
I agree with your comments. Dravid tried to accomodate Sehwag and that might have played a big role in the downfall of team india. Infact, accomodating players like Sehwag, Agarkar, Harbajan proved costly. Tell me who is better between Agarkar & Pathan. Surely, Pathan might give same number of runs as Agarkar, but I am 100% sure Pathan would have batted with the captain(against SL) and the result could have been different. Agarkar who was advised by Dravid not to play shots got out in the same over. Can you believe that, captain advising a player and he gets out in same over? Infact, we won 17 straight games chasing last year or so which is a record, when Pathan batted at no. 3. To me Pathan was a better choice than even Sehwag. I dont know if people remember or not, but when India was losing badly to australia at home in test series, it was Pathan who put up a decent show and added respectability to the score.
Coming to the original topic, I think media is playing games by making it look like its Australia vs Indian players instead of looking at the issue professionally. IBN CNN has some stupid crew who make it sound like its some traitor invading our country. I am surprised at ex-cricketers comments especially Srikkanth who doesnt want to buy anything related to Chappell. To me it looks like Chappell wanted to mould Indian team on the lines of Australian team, where only performance matters. A very good example we got was of Ganguly who stayed in the team for atleast one year just because he was the captain. No doubt he was a good captain but 1 year in the team just on basis of captaincy? Thats the reason we are far behind other teams like SA & Aus. Chappell didnt realise that Australia looks for performance and stupid BCCI ( or whoever selects ) based of names.
Tendulkar has given everything to Indian cricket. No question about that. But if you look at the current issue/question logically, we are asking for why Indian team fared badly. We are not asking whether Tendulkar has given everything to Indian cricket or not. It looks to me as if we are being redirected to a different issue which has nothing to do with current situation. Tendulkar didnt perform well in the world cup and that is a fact. Hes guilty of that and so are other senior players like Sehwag, Agarkar, Harbhajan and even Ganguly who played bad shot agaisnt SL and got out. It looked more like Ganguly was more than happy to keep his place by playing slow against minnows and then getting out in crucial encounter. He didnt get involved with the team and acted as if he doesnt care what happens to the team. It doesnt surprise me at all with his attitude like trying to get back at people, the way he did to Chappell after that century against Zimbabwe. We have a team with players like this and we want to win. Tell me how is that possible. There should be commitment and common goal of winning and not just individual egos or personal records.
Senior players should go. Thats for sure. Its time we had some players who are selected based of performance rather than what they did in last year or even before that. I think Sachin and Dravid should stay and Dravid should be the captain.
The worst thing that could happen is Ganguly named as captain.
Bottomline, Chappell is being made a scape goat. He will go, thats for sure but I think Dravid should stay as captain. If not Dravid, then some youngster should be made the captain. I would recommend Sandip Patil if people are so crazy to go with an Indian coach. Foreign coaches dont harm the team. Look at SL (1996), Kenya, Bangladesh( now). They all had or have foreign coach and it didnt hamper there cause.
Ajas Mohammed.
