I would greatly appreciate any updates or other news on whats going on with making this legal. Im too scared to have birth at a hospital because of everything that I've learned and want to have a homebirth. I live in Illinois close to St.Louis,MO and moving isnt in our options. More information would be appreciated. If theres anything I can do to help I will.
Thank You,
Heather

I have no problem with home births when ambulance backup for emergencies are available and the midwives are trained. I used to back up one local midwife who was trained by an apprenticeship and quite competent, but when she left the area, her replacement was incompetent and I refused to let her use my name as her back up doctor....and indeed, she later killed a kid because she didn't do CPR correctly and ruptured the liver.
But do you know the main problem? Malpractice insurance won't cover home births. I had a fellow lady doc who stopped doing home births when there was a problem and the kid died...the kid would have died in a hospital, but never mind. After that case, the insurance wouldn't cover us.
90 percent of deliveries can be done with a midwife. The other ten percent need Caesarian section to prevent a dead kid or dead mom (even in Africa, our rate for first births was ten percent...easier for 2- to fifth births, then complications go up).
So the main problem is a midwife who doesn't recognize complications, such as a breech lie or twins, or can't handle a cord around the neck or a shoulder dystocia.

This bill (SB 385) passed out of the Illinois Senate with a vote of 51-7!!! If you live in Illinois it's vital that you contact your state reprentative NOW and ask for specific feedback. Please refer to the bill as "Sen. Haine's bill, SB385, the Midwifery Licensure Act."

You can find your Illinois state rep at http://www.elections.il.gov/DistrictLocator/AddressSearch.aspx

You can also visit http://www.homebirthishealthy.org for more info (look for an update tomorrow)
