United States Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff has stayed the deportation of Mr. Mohiuddin Ahmed, a former Bangladeshi diplomat who lives in Southern California. A Bangladeshi court convicted Mohiuddin Ahmed of participating in the 1975 assassination of that country’s leader, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Mr.Ahmed’s lawyer’s last minute frantic efforts secured the stay order. In an interview with Southern California Public Radio on Monday, Mr. Ahmed maintained that his role in the bloody coup was only limited to maintaining a roadblock in Dhaka in the morning of the coup.

Mr.Ahmed’s family is now reportedly looking for a third country that would give him poltical asylum.

Congressman Dana Rohrabacher of California, according to Southern California Public Radio , was instrumental in securing the last minute stay of deportation of Mr.Ahmed, who Mr.Rohrabacher believes,  might be summarily executed in Bangladesh for his minor role in the coup.
