I am a veteran who did fielddwork at the albany VA.

The VA system and health care professionals, I found to be nice decent people.

the problems start when they discharge patients to rehabilitation/nursing homes.
I have written about the process as being a zipper of tiny lies.

Start with the fact that the VA creates categories. You can protest all you want but you will be placed ina category, and will be helpless to do anything about it.

There is a very good name to get to know for anyone who want to persu the problem of brain injuriy. Richard Edelman.

His work deals with brain injury. I put him in the same intellectual company as Naom
Chomsky.

You write:"The conditions at Walter Reed are symptomatic of how the war in Iraq is being handled and regarded by the current administration"...
Oh, really?
And how many VA hospitals, Army hospitals, Public Health service hospitals, or Indian Health Service hospitals have you ever visited or worked for?

I have worked as a doctor in Federally run hospitals of various sorts since the late 1960's, and could tell you stories that would make your hair curl. The dirty little secret is that the paper work is the priority, and those paying the bills care more about the bottom line than for the patients. The only reason that they are not hell holes is that they tend to have dedicated staff. So if the administration lacks money for lab personnel, the docs do the lab tests, and if something needs cleaning, the nurses get the mop.

If you want to blame Bush, why not blame Clinton, Bush 41, Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Ford, Nixon and LBJ.
That's how long the problem has been going on.
