State Guard Commander Major Serign Momodou Njie To Appear Before Court Martial Friday!

…Sacked Observer Editor-In-Chief Mam Sait Ceesay Re-instated, following Elders Intervention!

By Our State House Correspondent Landing Badjie

The Commander of State Guards, Major Serign Modou Njie, is expected to appear before the military tribunal tomorrow.Major Njie was subpoenaed to appear before the general court martial currently underway at the 1st Infantry Battalion in Yundum. The court is trying several officers and some soldiers of the Gambia Armed Forces about their alleged role in the ‘foiled’ March 21 military putsch. At the time of the alleged plot to overthrow the Yaya Jammeh administration, Major Njie was the commander of State Guards and he is until today. He was among officers and soldiers who were active on the ground on March 21 to provide security to President Jammeh at both the airport and the State House. Jammeh was at the time on a State visit to Mauritania.

Major Njie is therefore expected to inform the general court martial about his knowledge in the ‘aborted coup’ and his court appearance signals the appearance of even more senior officers in the tribunal.

Meanwhile, efforts by a group of elders and opinion leaders to plead for the reinstatement of the sacked Daily Observer editor have reaped benefits. Mr Ceesay has already resumed work at his Daily Observer offices.
