ALMOST SEVEN YEARS AFTER BARROW’S ASSASINATION

..SHERIFF MUST NOW EXPLAIN!

The issues surrounding the handling of the late journalist, Omar Barrow memorial trust fund will not be laid to rest unless and until those responsible give a thorough explaination as to what really happened.  We consider it totally unfair and unacceptable that the name of a young journalist who died serving his country should be allowed to be used fraudulently for financial gains while his family live in dire straits. One of the key original members of the fund, Alieu Badara Sowe has given his account of events and what he knows about the fund.  Mr Sowe undoubtedly pointed to Sheriff Bojang, who at the time of setting up of the fund was Editor-In-Chief at the Daily Observer, as the “architect and executor” of the fund.  Sheriff should now have the decency to come out and explain.  Burying his head in the sand will not solve the problem – Omar’s widow and child have a right to know!

Integrity is one of the key characteristics of a true journalist.  Sheriff, we believe, should know that more than anyone else. He has rose through the ranks from being a senior reporter to Editor-In-Chief.  At the time of his departure from The Gambia he was Managing Director of The Gambia’s only daily newspaper.  Sheriff knows the plight of journalists in The Gambia.  He knows, from the meagre resources to the poor wages, that the late Omar Barrow could not have made any savings for the welfare of his child and widow.

The Omar Barrow fund was well advertised, during and after its inception, with donation boxes set-up in almost all the major super markets and other institutions across the country.  It is now barely seven years since the fund’s inception.  The money collected could go a long way in helping finance Omar’s surviving daughter’s education and allow the family to move on with their lives.

We request and require Sheriff Bojang to come out and explain who the trustees of the Barrow Fund are / were, and the status of the fund – No literature please! Not only does Omar’s family have a right to know what happened to the money collected on their behalf, the donors equally have a right to know whether their money was used for the right purpose.
