Obama is what in Spanish lands is known as a "mulatto". Period. But ethnically, he is a Kenyan American, but since he was brought up in Hawaii and Indonesia and in upper class schools, he is not "African American" i.e. descended from slaves brought to the US whose culture is defined by having to live under discrimination for 300 years. The white liberals tend to lump politically correct ways but culture and ethnicity is indeed involved in thinking and the way one approaches society. That is why one wag wrote asking if Guilliani was "white" enough...because his Italian heritage is not the same as Hillary's or McCain's upper middle class WASP background.
