Dr. Walid Phares makes an observation that cuts to the heart of the issue -- he says, "Everyone to the east of the Mediterranean knows exactly what is meant by Jihad, while no one to the West of the Med does." He goes on to explain that western intellectuals have tried to soften its actual meaning to include a "personal struggle with good and evil." That is a relatively recent interpretation. For the last thirteen centuries, jihad meant conquest so that Islam could control the conquered lands. That is what Al-Zawahiri's new speech titled "Tremendous Lessons and Events in the Year 1427 AH" is all about.
