Allison Quets, who had attempted to stop the adoption of her twins to Kevin and Denise Needham legally for 18 months, was denied leave from the Wake County jail on Friday, after the judge ruled that she was a flight risk and a danger to her community, according to the News & Observer.
However, those who know her realize that she took her children to Canada in an act of desperation, because of a lack of adoption law regulation in the state of Florida protecting mothers’ rights, as well as a lack of regulation in the family law courts.
During the time in which Allison had unsupervised visits, she had attempted to ask Denise Needham the name of her children’s pediatrician, because Holly Quets had a severe diaper rash, and she needed medical treatment. Holly and Tyler also needed medical treatments for ear aches. When the prospective adoptive parents refused to give her the name of their pediatrician, Allison took them to a doctor of her own. As any mother would, she felt that them not giving her the pediatricians’ name and not putting the babies’ medical needs first, the Needhams were behaving in a self serving and were neglecting her children and putting their health at risk.
On a legal level, one of the concerns Allison Quets had, was the fact that she had not completed all of the paperwork, allowing both of her twins to leave the state of Florida.
Therefore, when the Needhams took both Holly and Tyler out of the state of Florida, with the aid of Michael Shorstein, this was illegal and should have initiated kidnapping charges against the Needhams, and Shorstein as an accomplice. The lack of adoption law regulation, has caused these important oversights to go unaccounted for. This has lead to Allison being arrested for kidnapping her own children even though she had done everything legally without justice. It has allowed for Shorstein to fraudulently obtain children and he is free to continue this business, and it has allowed the Needhams to continue to be responsible for these children despite the neglect, without any consequence.
When Allison had asked for copies of the papers that she had signed, Shorstein had refused to give copies of these documents to her. Another indication that adoption law is corrupt, because the only person able to get copies of the relinquishment or adoption papers, is the lawyer who handles the adoption. When a conflict of interest arises on behalf of the adoption lawyer, the laws protect them at all cost, even the cost of the lives of the children.
This is a clear indication that there needs to be a serious overhaul of the entire adoption law throughout this country.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI think she should not have any more access to the children. Sorry, but she signed the papers twice.
The twins are obviously doing well in their adoptive home and the only parents they know right now are the people raising them. Why should they be taken away from the only home they’ve ever known? Yes I can feel sympathy for Allison, however, but by the time this goes to trial in 8-9 months, the twins will not remember her at all; she will be a stranger. She was given the opportunity to be involved as this was an open adoption; however she abused the privilege and all rights by kidnapping the kids.
Watching Dr. Phil, it’s obvious the woman is very ill and can’t take care of herself, never mind twins.
It IS obvious to all of us that Allison Quets was VERY sick during pregnancy and after delivery? Is that reason to take her children permanently? She was seeking guardianship and help, not loss and grief and this nightmare. She was coerced. And let’s not forget that the Needhams and their attorneys failed to file ICPC (Interstate Child Protection Compact) paperwork, so if signing things is the issues, let’s truly address that. How do I know the ICPC paperwork was neglected? NC (where the Needhams took the twins) has a SEVEN day waiting period, a wait that was obviously not adhered to as Ms. Quets was calling 911 during the supposed signing. We would never be here debating if the ICPC documents were completed.
She needed help, for sure. But she did not need her children stolen (yes, I said stolen). The Needhams left FL with the babies and without the ICPC complete. That’s illegal, not to mention immoral to continue on with the process knowing Ms. Quets wanted help to be able to parent the babies. Was she able to at the time of their birth? Obviously not, due to health complications, but that does not (nor can it ever mean) she did not want to parent.
As for the assumption that the prospective adoptive parents (yes, I said prospective as they have not finalized or taken proper legal steps to finalize) are a great home…well, that isn’t clear to anyone as no one has heard from the Needhams. Why is Ms. Quets terrified for the safety of her children? She isn’t just miserable without them…she is terrified for them.
Finally, let me a question…the next step in the logic you present in your reply: if anyone gets a serious long-term illness (like HG or like PPD can be), then their babies should be taken because the mother is unable to provide care? Isn’t that when others (even the State) steps in to help? That language really angers me…illness can strike at any time with any one of us: me; Allsions; you, lise; anyone. I guarantee being sick with, say, breast cancer has not made women on chemo want to (or be made to) place their children for adoption.
What a heartless nation we are when the terribly ill are victimized instead of cared for.
Allison Quets was very sick at a time when she so need a helping hand in taking care of her twins. Yet the only help she had were from people who did not care about her.
