UK GUILTY OF SENDING ‘CHILD SOLDIERS’ TO IRAQ
BRITAIN broke a United Nations treaty banning the use of child soldiers by sending underage troops - including 17-year-old girls - to Iraq, it has been revealed.

One of the uglier phenomena of the Iraq war has been the insistent recruiting (apparently in Britain as well as the U.S.) of kids to fight this war.  I have watched the recruiters lurking at the gates of Brooklyn College and the nearby high school, Midwood.  The ugliest move, however, has been the acquisition of home phone numbers of high school students followed by recruitment calls all too frequently at times when students have arrived home from school, but parents have not from work.  Needless to say there is many a restless teen who might respond to offers of world travel, etc.  Prior to the Iraq mess I sometimes suggested to students at loose ends that military training might be a good move, but that was a time when our troops were being used in peace-keeping efforts  — but no longer can one make such a recommendation in good faith!  Ed Kent
