In the midst of bad news, once in awhile a hopeful sign appears: The Birds have returned to the Marshes of Southern Iraq

Saddam Hussein, in an act of revenge against the Shiite uprising at the end of Gulf War I drained the marshes in revenge, causing an ecological disaster and threatening the wildlife of that ecosystem.

As this UN news article points out:”Satellite images and analysis released by UNEP today showed that almost 50 per cent of the total area, one of the world’s largest wetland ecosystems, had been re-flooded with seasonal fluctuations, in sharp contrast to agency images in 2001 that revealed that 90 per cent of the Marshlands had already been lost….”

Since the US invasion and overthrow, local Iraqis with the help of the UN and private Ecological groups such as the Eden Again Foundation have been active in trying to restore this valuable ecosystem, with partial success.LINK LINK2
Many people consider these marshes to be the origin of the story of the Garden of Eden, so lush and productive that they nourished some of the earliest civilizations of the planet.
