The group United for Peace and Justice, which includes as members a diverse list of national and local activist groups, has for months been planning the nation’s largest public show of opposition to the Iraq War yet in Washington, D.C. with similar rallies all over the country, including a gathering in my home state (which I will be attending) of Alaska and a “Virtual March on Washington” (email writing campaign) put on by Democrats.com. While it is impossible to predict how many people will be attending the march, and how many will be marching and/or protesting around the nation, the group’s website says that buses are coming from 30 or more states with many people driving and flying in for the planned 3-day event, which will include a rally, organizing sessions and education, a petition to Congress, and other activities to help citizens get involved in ending the war. Other events during the three days will include a meeting of Veterans for Peace on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol building, an interfaith worship and organizing service, and a meeting of women’s groups including CODEPINK and the National Organization of Women, with appearances by actresses/activists Jane Fonda, Susan Sarandon, Congresswomen Maxine Waters and Lynn Woolsey, Eve Ensler (of the Vagina Monologues) and other women leaders and activists.
