“With one powerful yank, the man tore the bag from Nikki’s outstretched arm causing her to lose balance. Blinding pain shot through her system as Nikki’s head smacked against the concrete sidewalk. She moaned softly while straining to see through the rapidly collecting haze. Nikki’s eyelids continued to flutter as the gray turned to black, and she slipped from consciousness.”

Interview:

What inspired you to become a writer?

S.K.: My desire to write began with the Nancy Drew book “The Secret of the Old Clock.” I first became hooked on reading, and then just naturally started writing. The two are a perfect combination.

You are a strong believer in faith which is reflected in your books. Do you believe your missionary adventures helped in that regards?

S.K.: Yes! Missionary work has enabled me to witness miracle after miracle, and with each miracle my faith increases. I also now have a greater passion for others. I recognize the importance of giving both time and money. The blessings I share consistently prove to be a blessing in return. There is a saying that “You cannot out give God.” I am living proof!

Your book is set in Hawaii and France. Can you tell us why you chose those two locations?

S.K.: The short answer is Food! After spending time on the island of Maui, I learned why Hawaii is a magnet for professional chefs. The climate allows for growing fresh fruit and vegetables year round, and the ocean provides an abundance of fresh seafood.

Since I knew my storyline would involve culinary cuisine, it made sense to include Lyon, France. It is known as the World Capital of Gastronomy.

Can you tell us a little about your main character, Nikki Sabine Moueix?

S.K.:  Nikki is a definite French beauty with long, dark hair and eyes to match. As a writer for a popular food and wine magazine, Nikki was content living in New York. She dated a little, but when not at work, Nikki spent most of her time swimming at the local health club. Nikki met Ruggiero when she traveled to Hawaii for a work assignment. For her it was an unexpected love at first sight. Without hesitation, Nikki exchanged swimming in a pool for the warm ocean water of Hawaii.

Can you tell us a little about your other main characters?

S.K.: Ruggiero might just be called the perfect husband. First and foremost he is a professional pastry chef! That alone might be enough for some. He is also a Swiss born, blue eyed blonde with an athletic physique. A good looking man who cooks! Oh my! But the best part about Ruggiero is his love for Nikki. He is willing to trade his life to save hers.

Can you give us a short excerpt?

S.K.: Ruggiero checked the copy of Nikki’s itinerary, gripped the receiver, and dialed the telephone number for her airline. Then, after pressing a series of number commands, an automated voice instructed him to hold for the next available representative. While waiting, Ruggiero opened the refrigerator door and withdrew a bottle of spring water. He sipped and paced for at least ten minutes before a live agent finally answered. Then, it took less than two minutes to be cut short. Under no circumstances was passenger information available to the general public. Ruggiero stood motionless as the drone of the dial tone sounded in his ear.

After first considering driving to the local police station, Ruggiero decided it best to call. His decision proved correct when he was only able to provide enough information for a missing person report. The officer informed him that a detective would be in touch.

“Do you know when?” Ruggiero inquired.

“Sometime tomorrow,” the duty officer murmured. “I’m sorry, but that’s the best I can do.”

“Is there anything the police can do now? I mean,” Ruggiero sounded frustrated. “What if she’s been injured? What if she needs help?”

“Don’t worry, Mister Delémont. Once I enter the missing person’s information into our system, each department and every hospital will automatically receive the alert.”

“So, you’re not going to wait for the detective to contact me?”

“No, of course not. I’m sorry if I gave you that impression. We will begin the initial search immediately, and then the detective will take over with a more intense investigation.”

They say all books of fiction have at least one pivotal point when the reader just can’t put the book down. Can you give us one of your pivotal points?

S.K.: As Nikki is preparing to walk home from the market in Lyon, France a passenger jet thunders above. She looks up toward the sound and sees a white plume of smoke. On the other side of town at the Metro Cordeliers subway station Ruggiero too hears the jet. He looks up and sees the same white plume. It is at this point the readers know that Ruggiero is close to finding his wife. Or is he?

What’s next for you, S.K.?

A cozy mystery series. I cannot wait! My next novel will be the first book of my new Macaroni on Wheels cozy mystery series. This series is a fun and fresh story about a young caterer, her many escapades, and her colorful Italian family.
