The shocking report, called “Carrying the Cross: The Military Regime’s Campaign of Restriction, Discrimination and Persecution against Christians in Burma,” cites Burmese documents with the headline “Program to Destroy the Christian Religion in Burma.” The government document begins with the quote, “There shall be no home where the Christian religion is practiced.” The comprehensive report looks at the military regime’s policies toward Christians as well as various ethnicities and religious followers such as Muslims and Buddhist monks who do not conform to the regime’s version of nationalistic beliefs. The report’s author, Christian Solidarity Worldwide’s advocacy officer for South Asia Benedict Rogers, says, “Burma’s people, of all religions and ethnicities, have suffered in silence for too long.” (Assist News Service)

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackThe opinions are divided on this issue. Although the national policy is freedom of religion, and to a certain degree this is indeed the law of the land. However the letter of the law is upset by the key administrating officials at township level, these officials, whom this writer has met many are well educated and trained officials; they understand certain elements of fair and just administration. In general they do a good job. However they are under constant stress of following policies and guidelines given to them by divisional and state level authorities, usually these officers are from the army. They too operate under an assumption of what they think the central government wants them to do. There is no certain direction or operating policy that they must follow. One of the most significant comments that I have heard these officers say is that they are not afraid of losing their jobs; they fear the prospect of being thrown into jail, for a mis-interpretation of a comment. Thus the rude crude methodology is replicating what others have done and received praise, strategy is pursued. This method is also developed from trial and error of executing an activity and observing the reaction to it. When a positive reaction to a certain action is observed it replicated across the land. Many times the officer who gives the comments and remarks is not sure of what he wants, and if the result is something that looks good to him, for the sake of reporting to his superiors, then approval is given. Thus setting off a cruel and vicious cycle of policy implementation. Thus the element of Christen persecution had its sad initiation. Strange to see that some of the best friends of high officers are Christians and they are cherished and any other friend. But again the Myanmar government is highly jealous and although it cannot provide all the necessary requirements for its own people, it cannot understand the concepts or bear the fact that others will do things for nothing in return. There is always conspiracy behind and beyond.
