Two new bills have been proposed in South Carolina which could dramatically alter the political terrain in the War on Drugs.
The first, Senate Bill 220, would enact statewide legal protections shielding
state-authorized patients who use marijuana therapeutically from state
criminal prosecution. This proposal will not alter or interfere with existing state laws discouraging the non-medical, recreational use of marijuana.
Surprisingly, South Carolina’s medical marijuana bill was introduced by Senator William Mescher, a Republican from Pinopolis. Innefective, racist and unnecessarily cruel drug laws have always been a target of reform from the left of the political spectrum despite what should be broad-based appeal. Senator Mescher has become an advocate for medical marijuana reform since the death of his wife from lung cancer.
The second major reform opportunity in South Carolina comes in the form of Senate Bill 167, introduced by Senator Phil Leventis (D-Sumter). SB 167 would set up a state commission to study the impact of ALL drug laws in South carolina.
Needless to say, drug law reformers are delighted. For more information on the issue, please visit South Carolinains for Drug Law Reform at: http://www.scdruglawreform.org

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackMost people won’t comment publicly on medical marijuana in South Carolina because they are afraid to be associated with the harsh penalties for marijuana possession. For me, it is a life and death issue. I have an inoperable tumor inside the spinal cord and the ONLY proven medicine to shrink this tumor is marijuana. I will not be silenced, there are others like me out there. All cancer patients can benefit from medicinal marijuana and should not fear their government to do the right thing. I have written to Governor Sanford about my condition and my views on medical marijuana, Governor Sanford would rather support harsh, unjust and barbaric laws against marijuana than look at the proven, scientific research that shows marijuana is a safe, effective medicine for cancer and many other diseases. You may know someone with cancer, support the S.220 medical marijuana bill and write your governor and legislatures, don’t give up!
most politicians won’t touch this subject for the fear of losing a chance to line their pockets. This is our country and they work for us. If so many people in this country/ state, can benefit from medicinal marijuana then why are we still struggling to do the right thing. We vote these reps into office to express our interest but that’s not the case. There are many opiates out there that are legal for use and possesion as long as The Man says it’s ok. Well I am a combat veteran, and I now suffer from severe PTSD, and other “undiagnosed” painful ailments. I served my country and will die in pain, as well as many other upstanding americans that can’t get what they need. It leaves us with no choice but to commit illegal acts to get our medicine. What’s right and just about that? It’s socially acceptable to drink yourself to the point of intoxication or take some pills that eat your liver and zombify you. It’s ok to get Medicinal Marijuana if you live in one of the chosen states, but for living in a state where our reps and other politicians don’t express OUR best interest we get to Suffer. It comes down to this. It took William Mescher a man who watched his beloved wife suffer for 20 years with cancer before s.220 was introduced. Unfortunately when he died so did s.220 and apparently its going to take another politican being the victim or personal loss to move forward.

I am a legal THC user in the state of South Carolina. No, I can not get marijuana, unfortunately. Instead I am given a pill to take for nausea.
Of course swallowing a 15 dollar pill isn’t the best thing to do when throwing up, so you have to take it all day and every day. And that one pill has the equivalent of less than one puff. It would be so much cheaper to just smoke cannabis than take these pills all day, just in case nausea strikes.
One cannabis “joint” contains about 100mg of thc. 100mg of THC would cost around 300 dollars from the pharmacy, and it may just come up with puking. A joint can be inhaled, much cheaper, and works quickly.
Now that marijuana is much stronger than it used to be it is much safer as you do not have to smoke as much as you used to. Propaganda people try to convince the public that now that it is stronger it is more dangerous, logic shows that truth is contrary to that. Less smoke is needed for the same effect.
And if smoke is what bothers people there are always “vaporizers”, machines that allow the thc to be steamed off without combustion/smoke.
What I have seen in California is that disabled people are now treated with respect as they “work” growing cannabis for sick people and not denied this choice as well. Also some are now off the “government” roles for assistance as they now grow and provide cannabis to other patients through the dispensaries. It is a win-win for everyone.
It is bad enough to have a “drug war” as this is a war against our own people. To have a war against sick people who want to feel better is even more sinful.
Cannabis works wonders for nausea. It is also a great adjunct to pain medicine for those with chronic pain as it helps keep the patient from increasing the pain medicine dose many times. Cannabis can lower inflammation, reducing pain, etc. I have seen cannabis do wonders for people whether it be for insomnia, chronic pain, nausea, and even one friends wife who has a mood disorder but is very “normal” when she smokes.
I have MS and smoking marijuana keeps me from eating over 500 pill per month that were prescribed by a Dr. I hear a lot about “Quality of Life” What quality of life do I have when I am in constant pain or uncounsious. Dr.s are able to prescribe meds like Baclofen, Zanaflex, Nuroten, Valium, Provigil, Percocet, Ultram, Prozac, Wellbutrin just to name a few I have been on in the past 7 years most I still have a script for. Smoking marijuana controls the symptoms those meds do.Not only a patent but a criminal? HELP with good old fashioned common sense. I didn’t ask for this I was happy working 70 hrs a week and paying taxes like everyone else. Having MS changed all that now not only Can’t return to my job I am supposed to eat all those drugs the Dr gives me and sleep my life away I feel normal when I smoke cannabis unlike the meds that really keep me stoned all the time. Humm let me see break an old archaic law or be comatose from meds. What would you do if you were in my shoes?
I am a chronic pain patient who also suffers from RLS almost nightly. The RLS alone is enough to die without the pain. I have been own strong opioids for nine years and just recently found marijuana. Since I started smoking some I have less pain and it helps my RLS. I hate doing anything illegal but when it comes to the way I feel both physically and mentally I will have to take my chance. I would hope no judges would convict someone who use it by themselves without selling it to help illnesses we have no control over.
have been a registerd med cannabis user for years had no side effects …and I have chrones and anerexia and miagraines and it helps with all….whats with the ignorance…lets make medical ok and go on to the way were living in poverty right now….
i can say i have been in bad pain do to a car wreck i have been dealing with this for years and been giving the only pills that work oxycodone and lots of others and still cant get a doctor to write me them local so i have to travel i use to smoke and can say i didint need half the medcine i need now it didint only help with the pain but with anexity which i get meds for that to that the gov gets paid from and it helped for sleeping but do to all the doctors doing drug test i was forced to quite and not just that but to be locked up and put in jail for just trying to live a normal half way pain free life is crazy i never seen suck a thing it is proven it works so why in the heck are we not using it join mmp and call the senter and do something about this
