The author has brought out a very significant point which will appeal to US citizens who donot undeerstand the complexity of land acquisition in India.India is a country which is supporting 17% of world population on 3%of irrigated land.Now why should Reliance acquire FARMER,S LAND? Why cannot it buy land which are called PERAMBOKE IN INDIA:That is land which is not fit for cultivation and lying useless.?Basically RELIANCE AND OTHER FICCI MEMEBERS LIKE TATA want land near URBAN centres or atleast a maximum of 1 hour drive from Urban city centre which will consume the products of SEZ.so they are acquiring land from farmers who feed these urban centres and have been living on land may be by paying some premium.Because these SEZ LAND BECOMES PREMIUM LAND FOR LAND MAFIAS FOR HOUSING EVEN WHEN THEIR PRODUCTS IN SEZ DONOT SELL!!!!!One has to know the case of texteile mill land in urban MUMBAI wherein the MILL OWNERS engineered a strike so that The mills are closed and mill land could be sold at more than 1000% premium!!!!Reliance may be doing good business but actually it is exploiting the DISTRESS of MAHARSHTRA COTTON/SUGARCANE FARMERS due to draught.Instead of committing suicide(4000 suicides in a single year), these farmers are selling the land so that they can payback the loan to the banks.
Basically the present lot of socalled Industrialists donot have the GUTS of jamshedshi TATA who converted a barren land into jamshedpur and created a modern metropolis in his name.Nor the vision of Socialist prime minister who created Bhilai,neiveli,Bokaro from parched land.We have the spectacle of Singur being established at all costs by a marxist government in fertile land near Urban centre of CALCUTTA because the Westbengal government will loose out to other State governements this small car project of TATA and thereby employment of youth.
Free enterprise in india was flourishing during the permit/license raj of previous regimes by bribing/manipulating the state.Now in the free for all scenario exploitation of land without thinking about FOOD SECURITY FOR THE COUNTRY is not something to crowabout.
