A great reference for people is the many books by author Michael Dummet. Sir Dummett has written MANY different references on the subject -- however, all of his books are extremely rare and your best bet is a local collegate library.
   Some titles of use are:

A Game of Tarot (1980, duckworth press)
Twelve Games of Tarot (1980, duckworth press)

The recent monster: A History of Games Played with the Tarot Pack (The Game of Triumphs vol 1 & vol 2) written with John McLeod

Dummett also has A Wicked Pack of Cards: History of the Occult Tarot

All of these are great references; while he primarily includes rules for many (MANY) games, he also mentions specific history, documents, and the exact documents for his sources of evidence.

Hello Folks, = The Tarot cards certainly have some attraction , and as I am in my twilight years I have taken a close interest in their kind of entertainment, work, study or whatever you call it , playing with these cards. They are fascinating. Although there appears to be some minor changes with cards, and the history varies going back centuries, the basics seem the same. The more I have studied the subject, the history, the cards , the more I am fascinated , and can see why they create a wonderful interest of enjoyment world wide, with many nationalities , as it seems. In given time , not far away, I expect to become an expert in the use and handling of the Tarot cards, & bring great happiness & enjoyment to many many people.
If you like Tarot cards ,and would like to contact me , just email me = I`m retired , = =
and in closing , I wish everyone good health , & good luck for the future.

Antoine Court de Gébelin is often cited as the father of Tarot reading, because of his 1781 work "Monde primitif " which made the now discredited claim that the Tarot originated in Egypt.
However he is the father of Tarot divination as WE know it. There is an earlier example of divinatory Tarot practices independent of ACdG and the later French/Anglo occultists which was recently discovered from a manuscript dated circa 1740 in Bologna Italy. Although Bolognese Taromancy predated "Monde primitif" and is earlier, it was a completely independent development which had no effect on Papus, Levi, Waite, Crowley et al.

I'd like some more info on the history here... you say "There is also no record of Tarot cards being used for the occult or divination prior to the 18th century. " What are the earliest available records of their use for this purpose?

Corrections: The card game Hearts actually has no trump suit. Also for clarification, by "empirical" evidence, I mean scientifically acceptable proof.
