Not many books on religion are both inspiring AND humorous. “The First Book of Mimi” by Daniel Aldouby is such a book, and the result is a delightful read for readers of most every age. The premise of the book requires imagination on the part of the reader to grasp its meaning. An eighteen year old girl doing her laundry near the Sea of Galilee in 40 BC hears a voice that seems to come from within and all around her at the same time. The voice is that of God, her Creator, who tells the frightened young girl that she has been chosen to speak for him throughout the ages. It is an offer she cannot refuse although she tries to do so. So, “Mimi” as her Creator names her, reluctantly says farewell to her family, never to see them again, and embarks on a centuries-long journey; first through the biblical lands in the Middle East; then in Western Europe during the Reformation; and finally arriving on the shores of America.
Mimi does not travel alone, but rather is always accompanied by her loyal donkey Yofi and her handsome young husband Nahyim whom she meets early in the journey. She is also under the constant protection of her Creator who sometimes intervenes on her behalf in dramatic and spectacular ways.
Humor? The book is filled with it, laced into most every chapter. My favorite perspective is when Mimi becomes so comfortable in her role as a divine spokeswoman that she begins questioning her Creator which leads to numerous hilarious conversations between the two, much like a rebellious daughter with a bemused father. As its title implies, “The First Book of Mimi” is part of a trilogy which is good for the reader because that means there will be two more opportunities to be both inspired and entertained, both at the same time. “The First Book of Mimi” is a must read. It’s winner!
