I have never been a traditional book reviewer, I leave that task to those that wallow in Grade 6 Book Reports. I like to include the story behind the story.
I am always leery of ‘Self Help’ books. For a couple of years they just seemed to keep arriving in my mail box. I grew cynical on the subject. It was as if no author had a fresh idea. It was almost as if they were all using some piece of computer software to spit out the same stuff and generate cutesy acronyms for people to repeat by rote. Boring, boring, boring.
It was strange the way that Dr. Gary Penn entered my world. The problem was technology, the roles were reversed, I was the therapist and he was the patient.
During one of our ‘sessions’ Gary told me that he had a book. Throwing caution to the wind, I asked for a copy.
What I found was a thought provoking book. No useless acronyms, just a series of stories that show action and reaction.
In some ways his stories reflected on my life. One in particular caught my attention. I worked with a person, to call us friends would be a lie. My wife knew his wife. She would turn up in the middle of the night, Battered and bruised. Leave the guy we would beg of her. The final straw was the night she turned up with two black eyes and two broken ribs. We took her to the Hospital, and then put her on a plane to where she would be safe.
I had endless questions, why would you stay with someone that hits you? That answer is actually quite complex. I will leave it to people like Dr. Gary Penn to explain. The difference between self worth and self worthlessness is a fine line.
It is also safe to say that the human brain is a very complex place. There is no ‘road map’, each of us on our own journey of discovery.
I Can’t Believe My Life Has Come To This is an interesting read. Not every story will be applicable to every reader, but I will bet there are a few that you will pick up on.
