The New York Times is reporting on a program operating with funding from the Department of Homeland Security to develop software which will track negative opinions about the government by the people. The salient purpose of this program? To protect national security.

This is disturbing. Now, the most protected form of free speech, namely political speech, has become a threat to national security. Though the DHS spokesperson indicated that this technology would not be used on the domestic media, history suggest this is not the case. Lest we lose our liberty, these kinds of abuses must stop.
