In an interview with The Washington Post yesterday, President Bush acknowledged that the U.S. is not winning in Iraq, contradicting his earlier pre-election statement: “Absolutely, we’re winning.” When asked about this seeming contradiction, Bush replied ”that was an indication of my belief we’re going to win”, explaining that he has to talk to four different constituencies: the American people, “the enemy”, the Iraqis, and the troops. He did not explain why, if he wanted to express his belief that “we’re going to win”, he said instead that we are winning, as a matter of fact.
Still, the President thinks the U.S. will succeed, and wants to send in more troops. When asked about the possibility that the idea of going to war in the first place was “not so great” instead of a “justifiable and necessary” policy that has failed (so far), the President responded “I’ve never really asked that question.”
