This is a rather unsurprising story. Apparently Democrats hoped that the Foley scandal would stop…wait for it…conservative Christians from voting Republican. Thank God some top-notch investigative reporting from the New York Times shows that one fallen senator from Florida isn’t going to make any significant number of evangelicals vote Democrat.
Did anyone seriously think that a minor scandal would turn votes, not on the fringes of Republican support, but at the core?
Christian conservatives have devout religious beliefs that they believe strongly correlate with Republican values. They oppose abortion. They oppose gay rights. They support religion in the public sphere. They could not conceivably vote Democrat — indeed, many on the right have even complained that Republicans take social conservatives for granted, not that Christian support is unreliable.
