Donald Trump said today he is not planning on firing Miss USA Tara Conner. Pageant organizers were looking into Conner’s behavioral and personal issues, including incidents at bars in New York City where she allegedly drank alcohol even though she was under 21. She turned 21 yesterday. Trump said today that Conner made mistakes but that he believes in second chances.

“She left a small town in Kentucky and she was telling me that she got caught up in the whirlwind of New York,” a story on CNN.com quoted Trump as saying. “It’s a story that has happened many times before to many women and many men who came to the Big Apple. They wanted their slice of the Big Apple and they found out it wasn’t so easy.”

Conner has been living in New York since winning the crown in April. According to reports, Conner was teary when she appeared with Trump for today’s announcement.

“In no way did I think it would be possible for a second chance to be given to me,” she said. She told Trump, “You’ll never know what this means to me, and I swear I will not let you down.”

Trump said that Conner would be entering a rehabilitation program. A spokeswoman said that Miss USA is a role model and behavior such as underage drinking is prohibited.

Reports last week said that runner-up Miss California Tamiko Nash allegedly was contacted by pageant officials who said Trump was going to announce this week that she would be taking over the title of Miss USA.
